Is Quebec a city or a province in Canada?
Québec is a province of Canada, also known as French Canada, with a population of more than 7.5 million, mainly French-speaking. Quebecers make up the majority of North America's French-speaking population. The capital is Quebec City and the largest city is Montreal. The name "Quebec" originates from the Indian language and its original meaning is fjord. Aboriginal people used this term to refer to the mouth of the St. Lawrence River where Quebec City is now. The St. Lawrence River suddenly opens up here as it flows from the west.
This province covers a vast area and is the largest province in Canada (an area about three times that of France). Most of the province is sparsely populated. More than 90% of Quebec is located in the Canadian Shield. The north is vast and uninhabited. Quebec is located in eastern Canada, bordering Ontario and Hudson Bay to the west, the Atlantic provinces to the east, the United States (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York) to the south, and the Arctic Ocean to the north.
The largest hydroelectric project in the province is built on La Grande Rivière (The Big River). The far north has a polar and sub-polar climate, and some Inuit tribes live here.
The most densely populated area is in the St. Lawrence Valley in the south, where the provincial capitals Quebec City and Montreal are located. To the north of Montreal is the Laurentian Region, a geologically ancient mountainous area, and to the east are the Appalachian Mountains, extending to the East City and Gaspé regions. The Gaspé Peninsula extends eastward into the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
