What does Shiyan weir mean?

"Weir" refers to a small water conservancy project built on the inland river, which can store water and drain water. For example, Dujiangyan is similar to a reservoir dam. Weir, as the root and carrier of Shiyan farming civilization, is a form of water conservancy project for irrigating fields in mountainous areas.

According to the existing records of Shiyan local chronicles, Shiyan place names can be traced back to the Ming Chenghua and Jiajing years. "Hu Guang Tu Jing Zhi" records:

Shiyan, in the south of the county (now the south of Yunyang District), built Shiyan along the stream to irrigate farmland. These ten weirs include Shiyan, Jiuzhongping Weir, Huwei Weir, Bailong Weir, Jianshan Weir, Huanglong Weir, Shuanglong Weir, Tenant Weir (upper weir of white water), Moyan Weir (middle weir of white water) and Tan Jia Weir (lower weir of white water). This is the earliest record of Shiyan place names.

Shiyan place names began in the Ming Dynasty and originated from military camps. In order to solve the supply of troops stationed in Shiyan, maintain the operation of the government, vigorously develop the military camp economy, and distribute the land abandoned by refugees to soldiers and their families for planting.

The origin of Shiyan place names is also related to an old street. Shiyan Old Street, where Checheng South Road and Baierhe Bridge intersect, was called Shiyan Town before liberation and is one of the four major towns under Yunyang's jurisdiction. 1629, a native of Jinniu Town, Daye, Hubei Province, settled in Laojie area. There are many immigrants surnamed Chen, and the local people often mention the blacksmith shop, which has become a street over time.

In the middle of Qing Dynasty, due to the increase of agricultural area and the need of irrigation, Shiyan was built on the Baier River. Therefore, people used to call this street "Shiyan Street". "Chenjia Street" was replaced by "Experimental Street". With the development of social economy, Shiyan has become a regional reference noun because of convention. Shiyan Town, Shiyan Old Street and even Shiyan City are all different concrete manifestations of this term in different historical periods.
