Chongqing is such a big city, why not consider splitting?

There is only one reason why Chongqing is directly under the central government, and that is the Three Gorges Project.

Due to the construction of the Three Gorges Project, many problems need to be solved, including immigration. In order to solve these problems and facilitate management, it is planned to establish the "Three Gorges Province" with Chongqing as its capital.

Later, considering that the administrative organization was too complicated to set up a province, it was changed to a municipality directly under the central government. Moreover, Chongqing's economy is very strong in the west, and it is also a city with separate plans. As a municipality directly under the central government, it is conditional and simply directly under the central government.

The above answers why Chongqing is directly under the central government. Let's answer why Chongqing is so big.

1, since the Three Gorges problem is to be solved, the surrounding areas of the Three Gorges reservoir area should be under Chongqing's control. In fact, before the municipality directly under the central government, the area of Chongqing was not too large or too small, and it was similar to that of ordinary prefecture-level cities. However, in order to manage the affairs of the Three Gorges, the whole Fuling city and the whole Wanxian city, both prefecture-level cities, were also included in Chongqing, and the area increased.

2. Because Fuling and Wanxian joined Chongqing, Qianjiang, which belongs to Sichuan Province, is not connected with Sichuan Province, so Qianjiang, which does not belong to the Three Gorges reservoir area, is also included in Chongqing. In fact, the transfer of Qianjiang to Chongqing is also a small abacus in Sichuan. After Chongqing became a municipality directly under the central government, Sichuan lost an industrial town, which was equivalent to losing a pillar. The weak economic strength of Qianjiang means "the young and the old are poor". Sichuan just dumped Qianjiang to Chongqing on the issue of "unconnected land boundaries", which is considered as compensation for losing its pillar.

After Qianjiang joined Chongqing as a whole, Chongqing became bigger.

The Three Gorges Dam was built in Yichang, Hubei Province, and the Three Gorges reservoir area also includes some counties in Enshi, Hubei Province. In fact, Yichang and Enshi also want to join Chongqing, and by the way, take a ride directly under the central government. At least one or two counties near the Yangtze River can join. But I don't know why, this idea didn't come true. Even Zigui County, where the county seat was relocated as a whole, failed to join Chongqing. Therefore, Chongqing did not expand further. So now the Three Gorges Scenic Area still spans two provinces, not all of which are under the jurisdiction of Chongqing.

Although Chongqing has a large area, the urban area is not very large, and most of it is rural. In fact, I think it is best to keep the Three Gorges in a rural state, which has many benefits to the ecology.
