The city has a small population of ethnic minorities, mainly including She, Hui, Manchu, Miao, Zhuang, Buyi, Mongolian, Tibetan, Uyghur, Yi, Korean, Dong, Yao, Bai and Dai. , Li, Gaoshan, Shui, Jing, Lisu, Mulao and other 45 ethnic minorities, with a population of more than 12,000, accounting for about five thousandths of the total population. Among them, the ethnic groups with more than 1,000 people include the Miao, Yi, Hui, She and Zhuang.

The city has jurisdiction over two ethnic villages: Yunti She Township in Ningguo City and Huicun Hui Village in Shencun Town, Xuanzhou District. There are 1,064 ethnic minorities, accounting for 0.15%. There are 16 ethnic minorities within the territory, an increase of 8,458 people compared with the number of ethnic minorities in 1964. The main reasons for the increase are marriages, job transfers and natural proliferation.

One person from other unidentified ethnic groups and two foreigners with Chinese nationality, all live in Chengguan. At the end of 2012, Xuancheng City had a registered population of 2.796 million and a permanent population of 2.556 million. As of the end of 2014, Xuancheng's registered population was 2.798 million, and the permanent population was 2.574 million, an increase of 11,000 over the previous year. The annual birth rate was 9.24‰, the death rate was 5.95‰, the natural growth rate was 3.29‰, and the urbanization rate was 49.32%, 1.26 percentage points higher than the previous year.

As of the end of 2013, the city’s total population was 2,802,074, including 1,448,680 males and 1,353,394 females. The male to female ratio was 107.0: 100 (female = 100).

In the sixth national census in 2010, among the city’s permanent population, the population aged 0-14 was 369,000, accounting for 14.57%; the population aged 15-64 was 1.8741 million, accounting for 73.99%; 65 The population aged 10 and above was 289,700, accounting for 11.44%. Among the city's permanent population, there are 139,900 people with a university degree (referring to junior college and above); 272,000 people with a high school degree (including technical secondary school); 926,100 people with a junior high school degree; and 926,100 people with a primary school degree.
