President Obama: Nong Hao! Good afternoon. I am honored to come to Shanghai and have the opportunity to talk with all of you. I want to thank President Yang of Fudan University for his hospitality and warm welcome, and I also want to thank our outstanding ambassador Huntsman, who embodies the deep ties and mutual respect between our two countries. I don't know what he said, but I hope it is good. (Laughter. )

[Obama] Nong Hao! Good afternoon, everyone. I feel honored to have the opportunity to talk with you in Shanghai. I want to thank President Yang of Fudan University for his hospitality and warm welcome. I would also like to thank our excellent Ambassador Huntsman, who is a deep bond between our two countries. I don't know what he said just now, but I hope he spoke very well.

What I want to do is to make some opening remarks, and then what I really expect to do is to answer questions, not only the students in the audience, but also we have received questions online, which will be raised by some students present and Ambassador Huntsman. I'm sorry that my Chinese is not as good as your English, but I'm looking forward to this dialogue.

I want to make an opening speech today. What I really want to do is to answer the questions here, not only the students here, but also some questions from the Internet, which will be raised by some students here and Ambassador Huntsman. Sorry, my Chinese is far behind your English, so I look forward to talking with you.

This is my first trip to China, and I am very excited to see this magnificent country. In Shanghai, we saw the development that attracted worldwide attention-towering skyscrapers, bustling streets and entrepreneurial activities. Just as I am deeply impressed by these signs that China is marching towards the 2 1 century, I am eager to see those ancient places that tell us about China's distant past. Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, when I am in Beijing, I hope to have a chance to see the majesty of the Forbidden City and the miracle of the Great Wall. Indeed, this is a country with rich history and full confidence in the future.

This is my first time in China. I am very excited to see your vast country. In Shanghai, we saw extraordinary development, towering buildings, busy streets and entrepreneurial spirit. These are the signs that China has entered the 2 1 century, which amazes me. At the same time, I am eager to see the historic sites in China displayed to us. Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, I will go to Beijing to see the majestic Forbidden City and the amazing Great Wall. This country has a rich history and a belief in the future.

So is the relationship between our two countries. Of course, Shanghai is a city of great significance in the history of US-China relations. Thirty-seven years ago, it was here that the Shanghai Communique opened a new chapter in the exchanges between the governments and peoples of our two countries.

So is the relationship between our two countries. Shanghai is an important city in the history of US-China relations. Thirty-seven years ago, the Shanghai Communique opened a new chapter in the exchanges between the governments and peoples of our two countries.

However, the connection between the United States and this city and this country can be traced back to the earlier American independence. 1784, George Washington, the father of our country, ordered the construction of the "empress of china", a ship sailing to these shores, in order to trade with the Qing Dynasty. Washington wants to see the ship travel around the world with the national flag and establish new contacts with countries like China. This is a common American impulse-eager to open up new horizons and establish new mutually beneficial partnerships.

However, the relationship between the United States and this country can be traced back to the early days of American independence. George Washington organized the launching ceremony of the Queen, and the ship successfully sailed to the Qing Dynasty. Washington wants to see the ship go to different places and establish a new relationship with China. I hope to open a new horizon and establish a new partnership with China.

In the next two centuries, the trend of history led the relationship between our two countries in many directions. Even in the turbulent wind, our people have the opportunity to establish deep and even dramatic ties. For example, Americans will never forget that during the Second World War, our pilots were shot down on your land and taken care of by China civilians. They did so at all risks. China veterans who participated in that war still warmly welcome American veterans who returned to their hometown and helped China liberate from occupation.

In the next two centuries, the torrent of history made the relationship between our two countries develop in many different directions, even in the most turbulent direction, and our two peoples forged a deep and even dramatic bond. For example, Americans will never forget that after American pilots were shot down over China during World War II, the local people treated them and China citizens risked everything to protect them. China veterans who participated in World War II still welcome American veterans to visit their hometown, where they fought in the war.

Nearly 40 years ago, when the hard ice between our two countries began to thaw through a simple table tennis match, we established a different kind of connection. The incredible nature of this contact contributed to its success-because despite our differences, our common humanity and common curiosity were displayed. As an American player said when describing his trip to China-"People are like us ... this country is very similar to the United States, but very different." Of course, this small beginning brought about the achievements of the Shanghai Communique, and finally made the United States and China establish formal relations on 1969. Thirty years later, look how far we have come.

Forty years ago, another kind of contact was opened between our two countries, and the relationship between the two countries began to thaw through table tennis. There are differences between our two countries, but we also have the same humanity and curiosity. Just like a table tennis player said, that country is the same, but this small beginning brought the publication of the Shanghai Communique, and finally brought about the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and China. In the next 30 years, we made great progress.

In 1979, the trade volume between the United States and China was about $5 billion, and today it exceeds $400 billion every year. Business affects people's lives in many ways. The United States imports many computer parts we use and clothes we wear from China; We export machinery to China to help your industrial development. This kind of trade can create more employment opportunities on both sides of the Pacific, and at the same time let our people enjoy a better quality of life. As demand becomes more balanced, it can bring more extensive prosperity.

1979, Sino-US trade was only $50 billion, and today it is close to $400 billion. Trade affects people's lives in many ways. For example, many parts of computers and clothes in the United States are imported from China. We export machines used by China industries to China. This kind of trade can create more employment opportunities on both sides of the Pacific Ocean and let our people live a higher quality of life.

The political cooperation between the United States and China is rooted in our common competition with the Soviet Union to a great extent. Today, we have a positive, constructive and all-round relationship, which opens the door to establishing partnership on the key global issues of our time-economic recovery and the development of clean energy; Stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the disaster of climate change; Promote peace and security in Asia and the world. All these issues will be on the agenda when I meet with President Hu tomorrow.

In the process of balancing demand, this kind of trade can be more extensive. Today, we have active cooperation and comprehensive relations, which has opened the door for us to establish partnerships on major global issues, including economic recovery, developing clean energy, stopping the proliferation of nuclear weapons and tackling climate change. Promote peace and stability in Asia and the world. Tomorrow, I will discuss all these issues with President Hu.

And in 1979, the connection between people is limited. Today, we see that the curiosity of these table tennis players is reflected in the contacts being established by many departments. In the United States, the number of foreign students from China ranks second, and we have seen a 50% increase in the number of our own students studying Chinese. Nearly 200 "sister cities" bring our community together. Scientists from the United States and China cooperate on new research and discoveries. Of course, Yao Ming is just a sign that we love basketball together-my only regret is that I can't watch the Shanghai Sharks game during my visit.

1979, the contact between our two peoples is very limited. Curiosity in the field of table tennis has now extended to many fields, and the most international students in the United States are from China. Among American students, the number of people learning Chinese has increased by 50%. There are nearly 200 scientists from twin cities, the United States and China in our two countries to cooperate in many new research and discovery fields. People in our two countries love basketball, and Yao Ming is an example. Unfortunately, however, I can't watch the Shanghai Sharks game on this trip.

It is no coincidence that the relationship between our two countries is accompanied by a period of positive change. China has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, which is an unprecedented achievement in human history and plays a greater role in global affairs. The United States saw our economy grow with the standard of living enjoyed by our people, and at the same time brought the cold war to a successful end.

It is no accident that this relationship between our two countries has brought us positive changes. China has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, an achievement unprecedented in human history. China has also played a greater role in global affairs, and the United States has witnessed the growth of our economy.

There is a proverb in China: "Think about the past and you will know the future." Of course, in the past 30 years, we have experienced setbacks and challenges. Our relationship is not without differences and difficulties. But the concept that we must be rivals is not predestined-when we think about the past. In fact, because of our cooperation, both the United States and China are more prosperous and safer. We have seen what is possible when we engage on the basis of common interests and mutual respect.

There is a saying in China, Gu Yan, review the past and learn the new. Of course, we have encountered setbacks and challenges in the past 30 years, and our relationship is not without difficulties and differences. The idea of "but we must be competitors" should not remain unchanged. Thanks to the cooperation between our two countries, both the United States and China have become more prosperous and secure. We can make achievements on the basis of common interests and mutual respect.

However, the success of such contacts depends on understanding, maintaining an open dialogue, and understanding and learning from each other. As the American table tennis player pointed out, as human beings, we have a lot in common, but our country is different in some ways.

However, the success of this contact depends on our understanding of each other and our ability to have an open dialogue and mutual understanding. As the American table tennis player said, we have the same desire as human beings, but our two countries are different.

I think every country must plan its own path. China is an ancient country with a deep-rooted culture. In contrast, the United States is a young country, and its culture is determined by many different immigrants who come to our coast and the founding documents that guide our democracy.

I think every country should outline its own path. China is an ancient civilization with profound cultural heritage. Relatively speaking, the United States is a young country, and its culture is influenced by immigrants from many different countries, as well as by our democratic system documents.

These documents put forward a simple view on human affairs and contain several core principles-all men and women are born equal and have certain basic rights; The government should reflect the wishes of the people and respond to their wishes; Business should be open and information can be freely obtained; The law, not just people, should guarantee the just management.

I have a very simple yearning, which represents some core principles, that is, all people are born equal and have basic rights, the government should reflect the will of the people, trade should be open, information flow should be free, and the law should ensure this fairness.

Of course, the story of our country is not without difficult chapters. Over the years, we have been working hard in various ways to promote the commitment of these principles to all people and build a more perfect Federation. We fought a very painful civil war and liberated a part of the population from slavery. It takes time for women to be given the right to vote, workers to win the right to organize, and immigrants from all over the world to be fully accepted. Even after their freedom, African-Americans still endure segregation and unequal conditions before winning full and equal rights.

Of course, our national history is not without difficulties. Over the years, we have promoted these principles in many ways through struggle, or made them available to all. In order to build a more perfect federation, we also fought a very painful civil war and released a part of our enslaved population. It took some time for women to have the right to vote and organize workers, including immigrants from all over the world, before they were accepted. Even after liberation, African-Americans and Americans experienced some separation and inequality, and it took some time to win full equal rights.

None of this is easy. But we have made progress because we believe in these core principles, which are our compasses through the darkest storms. This is why Lincoln was able to stand up in the civil war and declare that it was a struggle to see if any country, conceived in freedom and "committed to the proposition that all men are created equal", could last for a long time. This is why Dr. Martin Luther King can stand on the steps of Lincoln Memorial and ask our country to realize the true meaning of its creed. This is why immigrants from China to Kenya can find a home on our coast; Why opportunities are available to all who are willing to work hard for them; Why is it that people like me, who had difficulty voting in some parts of the United States less than 50 years ago, can now serve as president?

None of this is easy. However, our faith in these core principles enables us to make progress and serve as our compass in the darkest storms. This is why Lincoln stood up during the civil war and said that any country can exist for a long time on the principle of freedom and equality for all mankind. That's why Dr. King stood at the front desk of Lincoln Memorial and said that our country must truly realize our beliefs. This is why immigrants from China or Kenya can come to our home, and why a person who even had difficulty voting in some places less than 50 years ago can now become the president of that country.
