Reservoir dam site selection

Dams are generally selected in canyons, and reservoir sites should be selected in "pocket-shaped" basins or depressions in river valleys and valley areas. The reservoir area should be a closed area composed of the dam and the highest contour line it touches. If power is generated at the same time, it is necessary to choose places with large topographic differences and build more hydropower. Avoid the fault zone, so as not to induce fault activity, leading to earthquake, landslide, leakage and other adverse consequences. For large-scale water conservancy facilities, geological structure should be considered when site selection. Generally, it should be selected on the geological structure with solid foundation. Compared with syncline, the top of anticline is easy to be eroded into canyons due to the influence of tension, and syncline is not easy to be eroded by the extrusion of trough, so syncline should be arranged at the dam site of reservoir. In short, we should choose areas with solid geology, large canyon area, rich water energy and few immigrants. At the same time, water conservancy engineering areas such as reservoirs need to avoid karst landform areas during construction.
