There are thousands of fights in the book, and a hundred herbs smell at night (part two)

Part II: "New World" pipe

The Pipe Craftsman and Trademark by Jose Manuel Lopez.

(Book price $ 125, freight $30, new book)

This book is a revised English version published in 2005 (English version was published in 2004), and the first edition was published in Portuguese on 1995. The reason why it is classified as "New World" here is just to be different from the three books introduced before in time and content.

This is an encyclopedic collection of pipeline brands with huge workload, covering most of the pipeline brands known today. Whether it's British classics or personal workshops, whether it's Nordic handicrafts or cutting-edge North America, major pipe brands from all over the world can be found here. It can be said that it is the most comprehensive encyclopedia of pipe brands, manufacturers, cooperage and his representative works, with pictures and texts, and extremely exquisite printing and binding. It may be a bit exaggerated to describe it as the Bible of contemporary pipe, but it can fully bear the reputation of "printed pipe". The picture quality in the book is the most exquisite in all my books, and the typesetting is exquisite and humanized. The concept of hyperlink similar to web page is adopted to distinguish the repeated pipe brands in the book from the colors used by barrel makers, which makes the query and retrieval very convenient.

I hesitated for a long time when I placed the order, because it was the second of the eight books 100, and there was not much book review information on the Internet. Now it seems that "pipe craftsman and trademark" is really worth the money compared with the same expensive "thin smoke".

Let's take a look at the wonderful preface written by three heavyweights for this purpose.

In the first preface written by Ben Rapaport (a famous pipe collector with more than 50 years' experience and the author of the fourth book "Collecting Antique Sepiolite Pipes"), he wrote, "This 264-page pipe book, based on a detailed investigation of 65,438+0,800 pipe manufacturers, deserves the highest praise and honor in the industry. The book is full of facts and data, and 560 full-color photos are luxurious and exquisite, including 65,438+000 biographies of managers, many of whom have never received due attention before and have never appeared in other management books. The book also includes a series of information lists related to pipes, such as pipe clubs, information sources, websites, museums and other documents. In short, this book is far more detailed than all previous similar pipeline books. "

The author of the second article is the famous Gregory L. Pease (www.glpease.com, who also took a very professional photo of his pipe on Flickr). He said, "Without his great love for pipes, it is impossible to complete such a huge encyclopedia of pipes. Although such a book introducing the history of ancient and modern pipeline brands may not be included in the The New York Times book sales list or recommended by local bookstores, it is such an encyclopedia of pipelines that shows us the long history of pipeline brands, pipeline manufacturers and bucket manufacturers in an unprecedented way. I have to mention that even among the predecessors in the fighting world, no one has completed such a grand work. I must wave my hat at Jose and thank him for his great contribution to pipe culture. "

"This is not a boring and academic monograph on pipe archaeology, but a speech that vividly shows the history of more than 800 pipe brands in ancient and modern times/KLOC-0. Some of them are well-known today's famous brands, some are past historical classics, and some are gradually forgotten over time. When I opened this heavy collection of pipe brands, what impressed me at first sight was its elegant and exquisite printing quality, exquisite photos and artistic layout, all of which were fully based on rich and auspicious content. " Pipe Artisans and Trademarks is mainly divided into two parts. The first part is an overview of the pipeline, including its history and structure. The second part is like a long-distance reading note that twists and turns through the history of ancient and modern management, leading us to the diversity of management culture and the aesthetics of management, covering all aspects and stretching from ancient times to the present.

This important pipe encyclopedia is a grand ceremony in the pipe industry, involving many pipe brands and people who make them, as well as people who are enjoying smoking. It is a standing book that every fighter who is keen on pipe culture and pipe history should put on the coffee table or bookshelf.

The third article was written by Vicens Lozano, the founder of Barcelona Pipa Club and Virtual Pipa Club: "The long scroll of wind music history you are reading is the product of years of hard work and love, and it is a tribute to the wind music culture that the author exchanged with infinite enthusiasm and hard work. So far, there is no monograph describing the pipe brand in such detail, and this book by Jose Manuel just fills this gap. But his work is not limited to this, because there was no shortage of handbooks and articles about the history of Guan in the previous books, and there was no shortage of books such as guides, archaeology and collections. However, no one has conducted such a thorough A-Z research on pipeline brands, manufacturers and bucket manufacturers as Jose Manuel. "

At this point, I think everyone has understood the weight and content of this book, and the three prefaces are enough to represent the position and importance of this book in the book. Compared with the prefaces of the three predecessors, any of my words will appear redundant and insignificant, but I still want to sum up the contents of this book and add some personal feelings. One is to let everyone have a comprehensive understanding of this pipe encyclopedia, the other is to maintain the integrity of this reading, and the other is my personal respect for the author and this book.

Let's look at the table of contents of this book:

Among them, the chapter "Trademark, Manufacturer and Manufacturer (A-Z)" is the core of this book, with more than 200 pages. I just want to talk about my feelings about the content structure of this chapter here.

First look at the content and form of this chapter. Because this is an encyclopedic Pipeddida, its brand introduction is carried out one by one in alphabetical order, covering more than 800 brands, of which about 100 cooperage or brands have detailed life introductions. In addition, the author gives different weights to the relevant content according to the brand influence and information. The more important brands will occupy as many as one page, while the unimportant small brands sometimes only use one entry to explain the time and source.

This arrangement is of practical significance because in just over 200 pages, it is impossible to describe each brand in detail like the first three books, and there are more than 65,438+000 brands that we are really familiar with and interested in. Therefore, the author gives more space to important brands in the book, while some small brands only exist in the form of entries to record history and facilitate inquiry. Perhaps it is more appropriate to regard this encyclopedia as a "pipe brand that goes out to sea".

Below, in the form of screenshots, select some famous, classic and cutting-edge cards to post and briefly introduce them.

In the limited space of more than 200 pages, this book pays more attention to famous craftsmen, especially northern cooperage. Different from the traditional English classics, Nordic soldiers' flamboyant personality, independent spirit, unruly instinct, subconscious nature worship and catharsis of freedom are undoubtedly displayed through their works, just like the wildness and enthusiasm in Nordic mythology.

Iversen? domestic

The famous boxer Iversen? Family occupies the most space, * * * three and a half pages (P 133- 136): Lars Iversen, Nanna Iversen and Sisten Iversen. Lars Ivarsson has been helping his father clean, polish and maintain pipes since he was eight years old. /kloc-at the age of 0/6, he began to make pipes according to his father's barrel type. According to him, 18 years old, one day he found a piece of wood in the workshop and suddenly had an epiphany. He realized that he could make a barrel shape different from his father's, and a generation of masters was born. Interestingly, besides pipes, Lars Iversen likes to make knives.

Lars's youngest daughter, Nanna Iversen, is one of the few female soldiers today, but she still spends most of her time designing toys and furniture. In 2004, she started a new project, which is to design products around pipes and special furniture for bucket passengers, such as the curved high-backed eggshell chair on the table board as shown below, and the right hand armrest is specially used for putting pipes and smoking utensils. It can be seen that this female fighter has unusual observation and creativity, and extends the definition of smoking utensils to furniture. I wonder if this pipe chair will further evolve into a special sofa, lounge chair, rocking chair, outdoor chair, or even a bed, auto parts and bathtub customized for bucket passengers. One thing is certain, this sensitivity to the needs of a very small group of people comes from the bucket customers' own practice and careful observation.

Recently, a cheap recliner was upgraded to a tube chair, which is not beautiful but very practical.

Sixten Ivarsson is known as the best cooperage in the 20th century. After World War II, he began to repair and manufacture pipelines. He worked for Suhr until 195 1. In the 1940s, he began to design buckets for Kyring (the predecessor of Stanwell Stanwell), and also worked for Pipe-Dan and Poul Rasmussen. One of his famous works is the egg-shaped pipe. Apprentices include son Lars Iversen, granddaughter Nanna Iversen, Jess Jonovich and Jon Mick. In Jess's eyes, he is not only a very creative fighter, but also a great mentor.

Bo Nord

Bonod? About a page and a half (P66-67), mechanical engineer Bo Nordh was paralyzed by a motorcycle accident at the age of 19. He only smokes his own pipe and likes V grass. He is a close friend of Jess Chonowitsch. He is also a music lover, who likes classical music, blues, jazz and rock. He began to make buckets in 1970s, and studied under Iversen. He is very creative and good at making complicated buckets. He hopes that the pipes will be perfect after forming. Before completion, pipelines are often put on hold for months until the best modeling scheme is found.

Jess Chonowitsch

Jess Chonowitsch is about a page and a half long (pages 84-85). He studied at the age of sixty. Paul Rasmussen, his grandfather is a violinist and his father is a boxer. He worked for Paul Rasmussen. Jess began to repair pipes in 1966, then entered Larsen Company, met Sixten Ivarsson, and became an independent bucket manufacturer in the early 1970s.

Nanchongchong

Nanbang is about a page and a half long (P2 14-2 15), and the mention of this famous figure always reminds me of Dunhill. To be exact, S.Bang is a successful businessman rather than a successful fighter, which is completely different from the pure handicraft routine of Iversen family. Worked as a workshop foreman in Larsen during World War II, 1968 started a business. 1970 After cooperating with per hansson, the business is booming. A year later, Ulf Noltensmeier joined S.Bang In addition, three other bucket manufacturers Ivan Holst Nielsen, Jan Windelov and P.H. Vigen also worked for him in the 1970s. According to this resume, it is not difficult to imagine that S.Bang has the comprehensive qualities that an excellent operator should have: leadership, personal charm, eyesight, market operation ability, social skills and influence. It is these comprehensive abilities combined with cooperage's ingenuity that make S.Bang's position today, endow S.Bang's products with an extra aura, and at the same time enhance cooperage itself.

Eldon

Eltang is about a page and a half long (P 106- 107). /Kloc-When he was 0/6 years old, Tom Eldon was apprenticed to Anne Julie, and later worked in Pip-Dan, designing buckets for Steinwell. 1980 start your own business. Strong gold dyeing is his unique skill, and his inheritance as a teacher is not mentioned in the book.

late

Former? About half a page ago (P 1 13), his real name was Hans Jonny Nielsen. He got this nickname because he looks like the British artist George Formby when he was a child. /kloc-started to study barrel making in Poul Rasmussen workshop at the age of 0/5, and later worked for Sven Kundsen and Larsen. While working, Larsen began to make his own buckets and sold them to Japan with the help of Master Jonowitz. With more and more orders, he finally left Larsen and became an independent soldier.

Teddy Konderson

Teddy Quinson? About half a page (P232), he is the brother of Sven Knudsen. He started fighting at 1968 and worked for Larsen. He is good at freestyle fighting. Wood grain is his inspiration for fighting.

If the Nordic manual fighting is compared to the freedom in Nordic mythology, then the following traditional classics are more like the gentleness and introversion in Greek mythology. Under the handsome appearance, it is a limited restraint and modification of primitive material desires. Mr. alfred dunhill's pipe aesthetics "pipe is a part of clothing, not a detail of the whole" is a true portrayal of British pipe culture.

Dunhill Road is about 4 pages long (P 100- 103).

Charlton is about 3/4 pages long (page 83).

Comoy's is about 3/4 pages long (pages 87-88).

Sasieni is about half a page long (P2 18-2 19).

Barling is about 1/4 pages (P58).

You can also see many talented rising stars in the book. These contemporary cutting-edge people have high cultural literacy and artistic accomplishment. They have grafted modern art and industrial design concepts on the basis of respecting tradition, and portrayed and interpreted today's pipeline aesthetics with advanced tools.

Cornelius Mantz is about a page long (pages 88-89).

A talented young German bucket manufacturer, who is also a graphic designer, started making pipes in 2000.

Lindner is about half a page (P 162- 163).

Self-taught young North American bucket manufacturer, majoring in art and design, began to manufacture pipes in 2000.

Kent Rasmussen is about half a page long (P203-204).

A respected Danish barrel maker, with technical assistant background in construction industry, started to make pipes in 1998, and got the guidance of Teddy Knudsen, who is known as the sculptor in barrel making.

Talbert is about a page and a half long (P229-230).

A cooperage from North America used to be a painter and designer. 1996 started to work part-time, 1999 changed to full-time.

Todd Johnson is about half a page long (236 pages)

Cooperage from North America, studied under Talbert, Eldon and Las Vegas.

In this book, we can not only enjoy the famous fighting masters, once brilliant historical classics and shining rising stars, but also see many fighting predecessors who work quietly and forge ahead with modern craftsmen. Two of them impressed me deeply, one was P.H. Wigan and the other was rolando NeGoita.

Wigan

Because I have never heard of these two barrel makers before, my personal understanding of pipeline brands, like many beginners, is limited to pipeline manufacturers of several big brands, and I have never paid special attention to barrel makers, or I don't have this concept. My understanding of P.H. Vigen began with three photos of straight barrels on page 185 of this book. Up to now, I still remember the shock when I saw the photos and the ensuing question: Who can make this ordinary straight barrel shape so tense? Through this overbearing tension, I feel the author's stubborn heart and unpretentious self-confidence. The reader's eyes have to be guided by it and locked in a bucket by the old man. It seems that I am not admiring the pipe, but that he is taking me to interpret his works. The use of various materials in bucket handle and cigarette holders shows low-key luxury.

Unfortunately, the biographical information about P.H. Wigan in the book is relatively simple, saying that1972 P.H. Wigan once worked for Larsen and studied under the former, and later worked for S.Bang, Pete Rasmussen and Anne Julie, and also worked for Pipe-Dan. In addition, the relevant information on the Internet is extremely limited, which mentions that he works for others most of the time, and there are few works with his own name. I also found the curved barrel made by P.H. Vigen on the Internet. The gorgeous barrel bowl is also full of tension, and its stubborn and confident personality is undoubted. I don't know what prevented him from becoming a master. Perhaps it is his character that determines his fate.

Rolando NeGoita

It may be driven by instinct, or it may be traced back to the source of the plot. I have always had an inexplicable affinity for the original gourd barrel. Every time I go to eBay, I always look at those antique gourds wrapped in leather and covered with rivets, and subconsciously hide the vague impulse to ancient tools. This impulse becomes particularly strong after reading alfred dunhill's Guan Shu. When I saw the self-portrait of rolando NeGoita on page P208, this impulse became a clear outline: I want this original ecological pipe.

Rolando Negoita is a cooperage from North America. He is also good at making knives. Rolando 1955 was born in Romania. 1990 before immigrating to the United States, he studied fine arts at Bucharest College, and later taught gold jewelry processing and product design at Parsons School of Design in the United States. Rolando has been involved in a wide range of design and production fields. Besides pipes and knives, he also made jewelry and fashion items, and served giorgio armani and Calvin Klein. When he was in Romania from 65438 to 0980, he began to make pipes creatively. The author comments on rolando's works in this way: "His works are a beautiful combination of free imagination and novelty, and the design is inspired by natural animals and plants and modern industrial elements. Works full of imagination and modernity are often full of surprises and are the perfect unity of aesthetics and function. " Besides, sometimes he doesn't pay much attention to the wood grain. He believes that "structure and function are the most important, followed by the natural beauty of wood grain, and the design process of a pipe is as important as the production process".

The author introduces rolando's life and works in more than two pages, and takes his beautiful whale barrel as the only pipeline photo on the cover. A whale jumps out of the sea on a pure white background, which shows the author's favor and appreciation for rolando. Although rolando's Guanzi is defined as a work full of modernity in the book, I personally don't think so, because it is not difficult to find many aesthetic marks of original ecological Guanzi from rolando's series of works. Without an in-depth understanding of the development history of ancient pipelines, it is difficult to imagine the birth of the series of gourd and walnut works, and the design concept of "paying equal attention to structure and function" advocated by him is a clear understanding of the deconstruction and functional evolution of ancient pipelines. After reading his life story, I had a hunch that he might have read alfred dunhill's "The Pipe Book", and this conjecture was confirmed in later emails.

At that time, because I loved gourds so much, I went to the online shop to order one after reading rolando's introduction, but I found that only two walnut series were sold, guessing that gourds belonged to his early works, and his pipe output was very small, only 100 to 120 a year. So I wrote him an email with a try. I didn't expect to receive a reply four days later, saying that I would like to customize one for me. The production cycle is about 2 weeks, and I carefully gave three choices "black rusticated finish" according to the grade. "naturally partially rusted" "Smooth natural finish", I finally chose smooth natural finish (a debatable choice), and of course the price is also the highest. Two weeks later, I received a photo of the finished product. The pipe is beautiful, but the smooth and natural finish is too delicate and lacks the unique antique flavor of rough carving. I also noticed that rolando was more attentive to wood grain and dyeing than before. After communication, he agreed to add a silver ring to the original shape. In a later reply, I euphemistically mentioned alfred dunhill's "pipe book" to verify my guess. A few days later, I received a slightly sensitive reply from him, "I also cherish A. Dunhill's books." I bought it in London many years ago. Ha, it really happened.

In the following time, I spent a lot of energy searching for his works on the Internet, and found that his series themes are very different. I can clearly understand the shuttle and various efforts and attempts of this diligent fighter between primitive aesthetics, modern design and nature worship, and "structure and function" is always the core of his works. Although some of his works are too vigorous or avant-garde, his spirit of forge ahead and unremitting efforts is impressive. In addition, rolando's works are influenced by Japanese culture and knife-making. It is mentioned in the book that he is good at decorating his pipe with gold, silver and titanium by Japanese alloy technology. Unfortunately, he did not mention that he was in the famous mountain city of Tatsu Yamashiro, otherwise it would be an excellent evidence.

Gotoh

Asian fighters are rare in this A-Z brand book, and they are all Japanese. Among them, Gotoh's works impressed me the most. The free and easy style embodies the unique freehand brushwork and balance of oriental aesthetics, but ignores the spiritual introversion and meditation of muscle representation.

David Wright's pipe buddy

(Book price $ 16, freight $7, new book)

This introductory book on pipe brands, published in 2000, can be said to be the condensed version of the last encyclopedia, involving biographies and works of 50 popular brands and bucket makers. The difference is that the focus of this book is to summarize and sort out the common materials, creativity, handicrafts, tools, production methods and market value of these 50 brands of pipes. 125 full-color printing is very beautiful, and it is bound into a portable manual, which is very suitable for the first time. Because its content structure is very similar to Guanzi Encyclopedia, I won't repeat it here, just translate its catalogue as follows.
