A Hong Kong permanent resident is a Hong Kong resident with a Hong Kong permanent identity card.

Hong Kong permanent residents visiting the United States are not visa-free. Hong Kong residents who hold Hong Kong SAR passports, British (Overseas) passports, Hong Kong identity certificates and Hong Kong registration certificates

How to apply for visas:

1. Pay a [non-refundable] handling fee of HK$ 8 yuan. This fee must be paid in advance at Dah Sing Bank.

2. Fill in the application form DS-156. This form can also be completed and printed online, and submitted with you to the consulate on the day of appointment. Please note: applicants who do not use the electronic form to fill in the information can only make an appointment for an interview on Wednesday and Thursday. (All male applicants for non-immigrant visas, who are between the ages of 16 and 45, need to fill in an additional DS-157 form in addition to the DS-156 application form)

3. Attach a photo of the past six months with a front and a white background, subject to a square of 2 inches (5 x 5 mm).

4. Submit the completed application form, bank receipt, passport with a valid stay in the United States of not less than six months, and all valid visas in the United States at the appointment time.

The Hong Kong permanent identity card is the main identification document for Hong Kong residents. According to the Registration of Persons Ordinance (Cap. 177), anyone who has reached the age of 11 or has stayed in Hong Kong for more than 18 days must register for an identity card after reaching the age of 11 or within 3 days of arrival in Hong Kong. Each Hong Kong identity card has personal data such as the holder's name and date of birth, and black and white photos of witnesses are printed on the card. Under the name column, Chinese codes are also printed to facilitate the government or institutions to input names.
