The history of China's immigration to California

Many Cantonese people could not survive the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement. They were sold by Qing officials to foreigners as laborers and sent to the United States to repair railways. More than half of them died and settled in California alive. It's tragic.

In detail, it is because of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement that the society is unstable and the dockers are unemployed. There are thousands of workers in the coastal areas. This is a very big powder keg, so the Qing government happily threw them to the Americans, which not only made money, but also eased the pressure. In fact, the Qing government arrested many civilians and sold them to Americans, mostly adult men.
