Chaozhou dialect, also known as Chaozhou dialect, Chaoshan dialect, and Chaozhou dialect, belongs to the Sino-Tibetan language family, Chinese family, Min branch, Minnan dialect, and Chaoshan dialect. Distributed in Chaozhou City, Jieyang City, Shantou City, and Fengshun County in the Chaoshan area on the eastern coast of Guangdong Province, broadly speaking, it includes Shanwei and overseas Chaozhou people gathering places mainly in Southeast Asia.

It is called Teochewdialect in English, which is derived from the transliteration of the word "Chaozhou". The Chaoshan area was an immigrant city in ancient times, and its main ancestors were Central Plains people from Fujian. The term "Chaozhou dialect" has been used since ancient times and is generally recognized by Chaozhou people at home and abroad. In recent years, it is also commonly known as "Chaoshan dialect".

Chaozhou dialect syllables include initial consonants, rhyme-initial consonants, rhyme-abdominal consonants, and rhyme-final consonants. Except for rhyme and intonation, no other syllable elements are necessary.

Teochew vocabulary has many similarities with Cantonese because the two communicate frequently. Just like Cantonese, Teochew has many monosyllabic words, which vaguely reflects its long history, because monosyllables were very common in medieval Chinese.
