Did Xinyang be considered when the University of Science and Technology of China moved its location?

In late September 1969, HKUST divided into two groups to search for addresses in Shashi, Hubei and Henan. There is a cadre school of the Academy of Sciences in Shashi, and the Henan group has a personal letter from Liu Xiyao, head of the Science and Education Group of the Central Committee of the State Council, to Henan Province. It is expected that it will be easier to choose a location in these two places. However, Henan Province is not very enthusiastic about the coming of HKUST to Henan, saying that it does not have the ability to host a university. The situation is the same in Shashi.

When the two groups of site selectors returned to Beijing, they both said that they could not go there because they had no conditions. Then two more groups were sent, one to Jiangxi and the other to Anhui. Jiangxi made it clear that it cannot accept HKUST. The comrades who selected the site in Anhui also felt that it was not feasible after looking at the Xuancheng area. But before they returned to Beijing, the two groups of people received notification of their destination in Anqing, Anhui Province.

First moved to Anqing

The address where HKUST settled in Anqing was Mashan, a three-story building and a canteen, with a total of seventy or eighty rooms. But there are no doors or windows in the house, only bricks and stones. There is no running water, and one has to climb mountains and cross ditches to get from the city to the mountains, making transportation very inconvenient. In early December 1969, the advance team arrived in Anqing. From December 17th to 30th, two groups of relocated people arrived in Anqing, including several families. A heavy snowfall made the weather suddenly cold. We couldn't buy straw for sleeping on the ground, so we had to go across a ditch to get water from the opposite mountain.

Due to poor school conditions and two accidents, we received a notice from Beijing that the third batch was about to leave Beijing for Anhui. The four members of the Standing Committee of the School Revolutionary Committee who had arrived in Anqing at this time believed that due to the conditions and difficult situation in Anqing, they should report back to Beijing immediately and postpone the relocation of personnel.

The final location was Hefei

At the end of January 1970, relevant personnel reported to Li Desheng, director of the Anhui Provincial Revolutionary Committee, and agreed to relocate the school to Hefei.
