The dialects in Jintan area are mainly composed of Wu dialect and Jianghuai Mandarin, among which Wu dialect belongs to the small piece of Piling (Changzhou) in Taihu Lake, and Jianghuai Mandarin, which was brought to Jintan by immigrants from northern Jiangsu after the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom War, belongs to Hong Chao dialect of Jianghuai Mandarin.

Jintan, formerly known as Jinshan County, was founded in the late Sui Dynasty (6 17).
