The proportion of immigrants in the British population is lower than that of some neighboring countries, but in the consciousness of many British people, the number of immigrants has increased rapidly in recent years.

A survey just conducted shows that among the eight European and North American countries surveyed, the British are most worried about immigration.

The survey, planned by the German Marshall Fund (GMF), asked about 1000 people in each country, and found that 23% of Britons think that immigration is the biggest problem facing Britain today.

In contrast, the average corresponding figures of the United States and the European Union are around 10%.

Moreover, among the countries surveyed, the proportion of immigrant population in five countries is larger than that in Britain.

In addition to Britain, countries that initiated this survey include the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain.

The Far ahead survey found that 59% of British people think that there are too many immigrants in Britain, which is far ahead of other countries.

In contrast, in Germany and the Netherlands, where the proportion of immigrants exceeds that of Britain, only 27% people hold the same view.

Among the British people surveyed, the proportion of immigrants as a burden is also the largest. About a quarter of them even think that legal immigrants should not have the right to enjoy public medical services or send their children to tuition-free public schools.

In all other European countries, the figure is between 1% and 5%.

In Britain, it is also the easiest to hear that immigrants have taken away the employment opportunities of native Britons.

Except doctors and nurses.

Despite this, nearly three-quarters of Britons said that the government should allow more foreign doctors and nurses to work in Britain, and more than half thought that Britain should be open to workers who take care of the elderly.

As for how to evaluate the government's immigration policy, 70% of Britons think that the government is not doing well, second only to Americans: 73% of Americans are not satisfied.

GMF is an American institution, but it has offices in the capitals of several European countries, aiming at strengthening the understanding and cooperation between North America and Europe on international policy issues. Craig Kennedy, director of the fund, said the survey should "wake up" governments.

He said that the survey shows that the populations in North America and Europe have very clear views on which immigration policies are feasible and which are not.

"But the survey results also show that the more people who have contact with immigrants, the more active they will be."

Analysts also believe that the British attach so much importance to immigration because Britain has the most relaxed immigration policy among these countries. In addition, the eastward expansion of the European Union has also led to a large number of Eastern European workers flooding into the British job market in recent years.
