According to the old law, new immigrants must live in Canada every year 183 days. If you have been outside Canada for more than 183 days, you must apply for adding paper back. If you stay outside Canada for more than 183 days without a valid return paper, the immigration officer of Canada Customs has the right to refuse your entry.

According to the new law, new immigrants must live in Canada for two years within five years to maintain their immigration status. Therefore, just from the perspective of maintaining identity, you can go back to work for three years after you get the maple leaf card, and then live in Canada for two years.

However, there is also a problem of domestication. According to Canadian law, naturalization must have lived in Canada for three years within four years. If you have only lived in Canada for two years in five years, you can keep your Canadian identity, but you cannot become a Canadian citizen. Canadian law also stipulates that the date when the following persons are outside Canada is regarded as the date of residence in Canada:

(1) working for a Canadian company abroad;

(2) Working for an overseas Canadian company;

(3) working for the overseas departments of the Canadian government;

(4) Accompany the spouse of a Canadian citizen to work or live overseas.
