Flood storage and detention area of Huayanghe Farm in Anhui Province

The area along the lake in the lower reaches of Huayang River was originally connected with the Yangtze River.

To the south of Huayang River Farm is the Yangtze River of the motherland, and to the north is Longgan Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Susong. From 1964, 1983, 1995, 1998, 1999, we experienced five years of floods. (Yangtze River flood 1964, Longgan Lake flood 1983, 1995, 1998, 1999). Our house basically collapsed on 1999, but it was supported by the state.

In order to use lakes to store water, discharge extraordinary river floods and reduce the flood peak of the Yangtze River, the Yangtze River Water Conservancy Commission formally put forward the flood storage and detention reclamation project scheme in Huayang River Basin in 1953, and drew up Longgan Lake, Daguan Lake, Huang Hu Lake, Bohu Lake and its surrounding reclamation areas 1367 square kilometers as flood storage and detention reclamation areas, with 368,000 mu of cultivated land and a population of 65,438.

1972 symposium on flood control in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River determined that when the water level in the Yangtze River estuary is 22.5 meters, Huayang River and Lake will be used to store 2.5 billion cubic meters of flood water in the main stream of the Yangtze River.

1In August, 1985, the Opinions on Huayang River Basin Planning compiled by Anhui Water Resources and Hydropower Survey and Design Institute put forward flood control schemes: firstly, heightening dikes, taking the actual rain patterns of 1969 and 1970 as typical design years, and the top elevation of dikes in main reclamation areas should reach17.5m; Second, dredging the port, and digging deep into the river bottom of the 26.4 km section from Guanhu to Yangwan Gate; Third, it is planned to build a drainage gate at the estuary of Yuanzhou Port; Fourth, control flood storage and detention, reclamation (or aquaculture) and comprehensive utilization of Guanhu Lake and Huang Hu Lake. Drainage is mainly to dig flood channels and increase drainage equipment.

In 2009 10, the dam of the Three Gorges Project of the Yangtze River was filled with water175m, marking the completion of the project and the people of Huayang River were freed from the flood. Irrigation is mainly based on digging ditches, diverting lake water to irrigate farmland in polder areas, and building scattered stations to lift water. In shipping, Huayang Gate is used to connect rivers and lakes and arrange inland waterways.
