What I learned from getting 4 points and 7 points in IELTS

In order to prepare for next year’s college entrance examination, my cousin sent two English essays that he wanted me to correct. Because he knew that I had scored an average of 7.5 in IELTS and a score of 7 or more in each subject, he wanted me to tell him about my experience in preparing for the exam. As a result, the dusty memories were opened again, and I recalled the experience of sprinting for IELTS three times within two months.

In Australia, according to its immigration policy, if all four IELTS components are 7 points, extra points can be given to immigrants. In order to apply for a green card and immigrate as soon as I graduate, I started preparing for the IELTS test in the last semester before graduating from college. For IELTS, because listening and writing are multiple-choice questions and the scoring is objective, I have learned a lot of test-taking skills in this area before, so I am very confident that I can pass 7 points in these two subjects. For writing and speaking, because the examiner's subjective scoring is sometimes controversial, it is also the weakness of most candidates, so I focused on these two subjects from the beginning.

When I took the IELTS test for the first time, I had not passed the test for a long time, so I had a try mentality and wanted to find out the feeling of taking the test. I didn’t review hard at that time because I still had college assignments and exams to prepare for. Probably because of my relaxed and indifferent attitude, I was pleasantly surprised when my first results came out. Listening and reading are indeed my strengths. I got 8 points in two tests, and even 7 points in speaking. Only writing was below 7 points, which was 6.5 points, with an average of 7.5 points.

After the test results came out, I thought that the reason why I failed to pass the test this time was because the teacher who judged the papers was too strict. Maybe next time, if I encounter a writing topic that I am familiar with, I can pass it in one go. pass. With this lucky mentality, I immediately applied for the next exam. Unfortunately, luck did not come this time. Not only was my writing score still 6.5, but even my speaking dropped 7 points (a score of 6.5).

When I got my second result, I was filled with frustration and unwillingness, but I did not reflect on my learning attitude. Because the habit I have developed since I was a child is that I would rather think about learning methods than really work hard to do too many exercises. My mother saw my state at that time and was well aware of my nature of "sharpening a knife for ten years and chopping firewood for a day", so she told me an allusion without talking to me.

The allusion tells the story of an oil seller. An ordinary oil seller was able to pour oil through the copper coin hole into the gourd without even getting the copper coins wet. Ask him How to do it, he replied: "Nothing but familiarity" (nothing, it's just that practice makes perfect).

After reading the sentence "Nothing but familiarity", I was so speechless that I couldn't say anything in defense. That's right, I didn't get a score of 7 in the writing test because I didn't practice enough and was a slut, so there's no other excuse. This sentence inspired my fighting spirit, and I vowed to conquer the writing test and pass 7 points.

So, I began to seriously make a plan to review writing:

1. I must practice 5 essays every day, so that I can write 100 essays before the exam. . There must be quantity in order to change from quantitative to qualitative change.

2. When practicing, you should follow the real test. In addition to timing, I also printed the IELTS writing answer sheet to familiarize myself with the paper. Handwriting, no need for computer typing, enhances hand feel.

3. Before writing a composition, you must first think about it. 3 minutes for small compositions and 5 minutes for large compositions to ensure that the paper can be neat and tidy after writing. When there are 5 minutes left at the end, you should finish writing, leaving time to read it over, check for grammatical errors, and make final corrections.

4. Completing the composition on time is only the foundation. In order to improve your writing level, type the composition into a word document and make secondary revisions. I have asked people to help me revise my articles before, but no matter what, they always revised the articles according to their current level, which did not help much in improving my level. Only by identifying your own faults and making suggestions for modification can it be effective.

5. Summarize different types of article formats and topics. For example, for short compositions, the formats are wire diagrams, pie charts, flow charts, bar charts, tables and maps.

For large compositions, there are topics such as economics, culture, learning, etc. Each type has its own characteristics. After completing the exercises of one type, you can summarize the ideas that can be applied.

After practicing hard for more than half a month, my third exam came. Thank God, I finally passed successfully this time (listening 8, reading 7.5, speaking 7.5, writing 7, average 7.5).

Cousin, your sister and I have also been lazy and taken shortcuts, trying to pass the exam by luck. But it doesn't always work out. There is no exam that you can't pass, there is only yourself who is unwilling to put in the corresponding effort. If you want to achieve what you want in the college entrance examination, I will give you a word - nothing but familiarity.
