With a feeling of sincerity and fear , I started writing the story of my life. My childhood was shrouded in a thick fog-like curtain. Now I want to lift it, but I have doubts and hesitation. Writing an autobiography is often difficult because time has passed and fact and imagination are often confused and difficult to distinguish. When describing past experiences, it is inevitable that my own imagination will be mixed in unknowingly. Some vivid memories jumped out of my mind unconsciously, while others "stuck there like a prison-like shadow." When I was a child, some other ups and downs had long since lost their former bitterness and gradually faded away; after experiencing more novel stimulations, some crucial events in my early education had also been forgotten. Therefore, in order to avoid procrastination, I shall endeavor to present only those fragments which to me are most interesting and important.

I was born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, a small town in northern Alabama.

My paternal ancestors came from the Swiss Caspar Keller family, who immigrated to Maryland in the United States. One of the Swiss ancestors turned out to be an expert on deaf-mute education in Zurich. He once wrote a book on deaf-mute education. Who would have thought that he would have a descendant who is blind, deaf and mute like me.
