Zhengzhou was hit by heavy rain. Why did people in Zhoukou Xihua and Fugou need to evacuate urgently?

Recently, Zhengzhou has been hit by heavy rainstorms, and the water levels of many reservoirs and rivers in the city have reached warning levels. Among them, the Changzhuang Reservoir located in Xushui Town, Zhongyuan District has issued multiple dam break warnings. The reservoir is 135 meters high, which is 36 meters higher than the Erqi Tower, the landmark building in Zhengzhou. Once an accident occurs, the consequences will be disastrous.

At the same time, serious overflows occurred along the banks of the Jialu River, Xiong'er River and other rivers. Although the rain has stopped, the water level in many communities is still around the waist. In order to solve this situation, it is necessary to discharge floods from reservoirs and rivers within the territory. Use diversion methods to lower the water level.

When the water in the reservoir flows into the Jialu River, the Jialu River will naturally open its gates to release floods and flow downstream. The downstream areas such as Zhoukou Fugou and Xihua, as yellow flood areas, have naturally become necessary places for flood discharge.

The Jialu River originates from Xinmi City, Henan Province, stretches 255 kilometers eastward and then merges into the Huaihe River. It was called Honggou during the Warring States Period, Langdangqu during the Han Dynasty, and Caihe during the Tang and Song Dynasties. During the Yuan Dynasty, the Yellow River burst its banks in the north of Kaifeng, and the Bian and Cai rivers were blocked by Yellow River sediment.

Jia Lu, Minister of Industry of the Yuan Dynasty, was ordered to dredge the river and successfully solve the flood problem. In order to commemorate his achievements, later generations named the river "Jia Lu River".

The current Jialu River originates from Shengshui Valley in Baizhai, Xinmi City. It flows northeastward through Houzhai and Xiliu Lake in Zhengzhou City, reaches Laoyaya in the northern suburbs, flows eastward, passes through Liulin and Yaoqiao, then passes through Baisha in Zhongmou County, and goes around the southeast of the county to Huxinzhuang and flows into Weishi County. Then it goes to Xihua and Fugou in Zhoukou City, where it enters the Shaying River and then the Huaihe River.

The Jinshui River, Suoxu River, Xiong'er River, and Qili River in Zhengzhou City are all its branches. They are also the most important source of production and living water in Zhengzhou City.

After the flood is discharged, the river will inevitably flow through Fugou and Xihua. The water conservancy department predicts that the flow of the Jialu River in Zhoukou City will exceed 200 cubic meters per second, which has seriously exceeded the Jialu River's flow capacity. Therefore, evacuating early is the safest behavior.

Now, there are more than 100,000 people in Xihua County and more than 200,000 people in Fugou County. They have evacuated dangerous areas or moved to safe areas on the second floor and above. In order to defend Zhengzhou and protect their loved ones, the people of Zhoukou made great sacrifices.

Not only that, this time Zhengzhou discharges floods to the Jialu River, Xuchang discharges floods to the Ying River, and Pingdingshan discharges floods to the Shahe River. This will be a big test for Zhoukou where the Shahe, Yinghe, and Jialu rivers meet. But we believe that as long as we can deal with it scientifically, the water in the river will never overflow the iron ox at the gate.

I also hope that fellow Zhoukou folks who are working hard outside don’t have to worry and their families will be fine.
