In the Tang Dynasty, it set sail from Quanzhou or Guangzhou, passing through Hainan Island, Guo Huan (in present-day Vietnam), Mendu, Guwan, Longyamen, Luoyue, Sri Lifo, Hu Ling, Guluo, Koguryo, Shengdeng, Bulu, Lion, Nantianzhu, Brahman, Xinduhe and Tiro. At the same time, people from the Tang Dynasty emigrated overseas.

In the Song Dynasty, companies were established in Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Quanzhou, Jiaozhou, Jiaxing (Xiuzhou), Huating County (now Songjiang), Zhenjiang, Suzhou, Wenzhou, Jiangyin and Haiyan to manage overseas trade. Among them, Guangzhou, Quanzhou and Mingzhou are the largest.
