Thaksin is now abroad. On November 4, 2009, the Cambodian government appointed Thaksin Shinawatra as the economic adviser to Cambodia and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. In August 2010, the Montenegrin government confirmed that former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra had obtained Montenegrin citizenship.

Thaksin Shinawatra, former Prime Minister of Thailand, entrepreneur, fourth generation Thai Chinese Hakka. Born in Chiang Mai, Thailand on July 26, 1949, he was elected as the 23rd Prime Minister of Thailand on February 9, 2001. He became the first Prime Minister in the history of Thailand to serve a full four-year term and the first Prime Minister to be re-elected through election. On September 19, 2006, the Thai military launched a coup, and Thaksin was forced into exile. In May 2007, the Thai Rak Thai Party led by Thaksin was declared disbanded by the court. In 2010, Thailand's Supreme Court ruled to confiscate the 46.373 billion baht frozen by Thaksin and his family. During his administration, Thaksin led Thailand out of the Asian financial crisis, cracked down on drugs with an iron fist, and carried out a severe military crackdown on the Muslim armed separatist movement in southern Thailand. On October 12, 2015, the Thai Criminal Court held the first hearing on the military’s defamation case against former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Thaksin himself was absent. The criminal court subsequently signed an arrest warrant against Thaksin.
