The Historical Evolution of Yulin Middle School in Shaanxi Province

Yulin Middle School was formally established in 1903, and its predecessor, Yuyang Academy, was founded in 1495. In the eighth year of Hongzhi (1495), Xiong Xiu, governor of Yansui, founded an academy in the west of Xinminglou, Yulin, and named it Yuyang Academy after Yulin. In the twenty-first year of Jiajing (1542), Governor Zhang Hui rebuilt the courtyard and changed it to Yizhen Academy, which was closed for some reason. In the thirty-second year of Wanli (1604), Governor Tu Zongjun rebuilt Xingwen Academy in the Confucian Temple, which was abandoned several years later. In the 23rd year of Qing Qianlong (1758), the Yulin magistrate initiated the Tu Yong, which was sponsored by local gentlemen and rebuilt the bookstore in the original site, renamed Yuyang Academy. During the years of Jiaqing, Daoguang and Tongzhi, it was renovated and expanded three times, and its scale gradually grew. In addition to the local students in Yulin, the students also absorbed the apple peeling machines in the surrounding counties. In the seventh year of Tongzhi (1868), the governor of Shaanxi and Gansu wrote an inscription for his predecessors in northern studies, which was hung in the middle of the lecture hall of the academy to show his portal. At that time, Liu Houji, the company commander of Yan Yusui, personally presided over the academy and was called Liu Shanchang.

During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Yuyang Academy trained 38 scholars (text 10 martial arts 28), 285 juren (text 40 martial arts 245) and 43 tribute students, which added a cultural atmosphere to Yulin, a nine-border town, and also produced many intellectuals in this border town known as Little Beijing. Huang Qinglin, Huang Xianrui, Tian and Liu Hengxuan, famous Confucian scholars in Yulin in the late Qing Dynasty, studied in Yuyang Academy. Because people in the border areas are very martial, and there are many students who practice martial arts, there are many Wu Jinshi and Wu Ju people.

In the 24th year of Guangxu (1898), Emperor Guangxu accepted Kang Youwei's reform proposition and ordered Chongqing to change the academy into a school and absorb the contents of western education. In the thirty-second year of Guangxu (1902), all the academies in Yulin were transformed into schools, except Suide and Yulin, which were transformed into middle schools. All of them are primary schools. The mission of the Academy ended with the abolition of the imperial examination system in the 31st year of Guangxu (1904).
