The only difference is that students who need a visa must apply for a student pass in their own country, while students who do not need a visa to study in Singapore can apply for a student pass after arriving in Singapore.

What type of study visa to apply for in Singapore depends on the applicant's country of origin. For those applicants who need a visa, once you register at a university in Singapore, you can apply for a visa by using the student pass online application and registration system (SOLAR+). When the visa application is successful, students will get a SOLAR+ application number, and then they can use it to apply for a Singapore student pass from their own country. When you get a student visa from Immigration Singapore (ICA), you will be charged an extra visa fee.

Singapore Institute of Higher Education (IHL)

All foreign students admitted to full-time courses of Singapore Institute of Higher Education (IHL) must apply for student passes online through the SOLAR+ system. When you complete the form in the online application system, the Singapore institution you are admitted to will submit the application to the Singapore Immigration Bureau on your behalf. Once the application is approved, the applicant needs to go to the ICA office to get his student ID card.

For students who still need to apply for visas, the processing time of student ID cards is 10 days.

IPA and other application requirements

Once your application is approved, the school where you will study in Singapore will give you a letter entitled "Principal Approval (IPA)". For those who need a visa, the visa will be sent in this letter. This IPA will be used as a temporary student pass until you get a real student pass from the ICA office. If applicable, you can use it to enter Singapore.

Some universities, such as Nanyang Technological University, require students to complete physical examination before starting their studies. Those who have studied for more than 6 months must attend the compulsory physical examination of the school. Once you finish the exam, you will get a medical report, and then you need to submit it to ICA when you apply for a student pass. Students can choose to complete the physical examination in their own country, as long as the report is in the format approved by ICA.

Get a student id card.

Occasionally, your university may be authorized by ICA to issue you a campus student ID card. However, in most cases, students need to contact ICA to arrange an appointment to get a pass and submit other additional documents. The appointment meeting must be completed within the time range given in IPA letter. Student ID cards are issued no earlier than one month before the start of school.

When you go to get your student ID card, make sure you have the following documents ready:
