Many permanent residents in Canada believe that as long as they meet the residence requirements for two years within five years, they can successfully obtain a new maple leaf card. But in fact, some immigrants have been approved to apply for extension of Maple Leaf Card, but it is difficult for them to get a new card, so that they can't get a new card before the old card expires. Recently, the center received several calls for help and found that they couldn't get a new maple leaf card because they didn't understand the precautions for getting a new maple leaf card.

According to the regulations, all passports used in the past five years must be carried with you when you apply for a new card. In the past, when applying for extension of Maple Leaf Card, some immigrants lied that their old passports were lost because they did not meet the requirement of living for two years within five years. Now the Immigration Bureau strictly enforces this rule. Some immigrants who meet the residence conditions may not get a new maple leaf card because of the loss of their passports, or they may be asked by the immigration bureau to supplement the materials. This is the case with Mr. Zhang who called for help. Mr. Zhang's new passport was changed three years ago. He has only left Canada once in these three years, that is, he has returned to China for one month. Mr. Zhang's old passport was left at home, and it was probably lost because of poor custody. When he went to get a new maple leaf card, the immigration officer asked him to show his old passport. Mr. Zhang said, "My new passport is enough to prove that I have lived in Canada for more than two years in the past five years. I don't need to show my old passport. " As a result, the immigration officer said to him, "You can get a new card if you bring your old passport." Some people may think that it is a bit unkind for immigration officials to do so. But he has the right to do so, because he is enforcing the rules. Therefore, I would like to remind new immigrants to take good care of all their passports after landing, not only the extension of maple leaf card, but also the application for naturalization. If you really lose your old passport, you must report it to the police and provide the lost record to the Immigration Bureau.

In addition, at least one Canadian certificate with photos (except maple leaf card), such as driver's license or health certificate, should be provided when receiving maple leaf card. Some immigrants did not take the Canadian driver's license for various reasons, did not apply for a health card or the health card has expired. Some people can't get a new maple leaf card because of this, so they have to reissue a health card, and the new health card will not take effect until three months later.
