What is the difference between IELTS and TOEFL? Which one to study in Hong Kong?

The first category is business.

The minimum requirement of the Business School of the University of Hong Kong for an applicant's language score is IELTS 7 (6.5) or TOEFL 90.

Although the language requirement of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Business School is IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 79, and the language score requirement of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is IELTS 6 (score 5.5) or TOEFL 80, please don't think that you can be admitted as long as you take this score. Judging from the data of the last two years, IELTS 7+ and TOEFL 100+ are basically standard.

The second category is the media.

Media major is also a popular major, and it has high requirements for English, especially journalism major.

For example, the journalism major of the University of Hong Kong requires applicants to achieve at least IELTS 7 (6) or TOEFL 95. The media in some British schools will even ask for IELTS score of 7.5. If you apply for the media, you must get at least 7 points in IELTS before you can be admitted to an ideal school.

The third category is law.

Because of the particularity of the law and the small number of schools in Hong Kong, there are also higher requirements for language achievement. For example, the LLM of HKU requires IELTS score of 7 (score 6.5) and TOEFL score of 97, and the law school of City University requires IELTS score of 7.

The fourth category is English education.

English majors include linguistics, English education and translation, and these majors will pay more attention to IELTS scores when they are admitted. For example, HKUST TESOL clearly requires IELTS score of 7 and writing score of 7.
