What is the military service system in Singapore?

National service is a national policy required by Singapore's laws and regulations, requiring all male Singaporean citizens and second-generation permanent residents to volunteer for a period of time in the military and police departments. It was originally established in 1967 to help the Singapore army establish a new military force shortly after independence, and then extended to the police and civil defense forces.

Singapore has a compulsory military service system with a service period of 2-3 years. Singapore's armed forces have three components, namely, regular troops, active servicemen and combat readiness soldiers; Regular soldiers refer to professional soldiers, active soldiers refer to soldiers aged between 16 and 20 who have served two years of compulsory military service, and combat readiness soldiers refer to reserve soldiers who have retired from active service and entered a ten-year training cycle and can be mobilized within a certain period of time.

At least six months before joining the army, the human resources base of Singapore Center will send a letter to those who meet the conditions of 18 for physical examination. One is to determine your physical condition through physical examination, and the other is to see what troops you are suitable for. If you are studying locally or abroad, you can apply for an extension of enlistment and you need to submit relevant documents to prove your reasons.

Anyone who evades military service will be tried by a military court and sentenced to up to three years' imprisonment or a fine of up to S $5,000, or both. Male immigrants who have military service obligations will lose their permanent resident status if they fail to perform or fail to perform their military service obligations as required.
