Why is Minnan dialect so similar to Chaoshan dialect? We Chaoshan people can understand the basic Taiwanese dialect in Taiwan Province Province, Chaoshan area in Guangdong Province and Fujian Province. TiMi-Chiu-u, also known as Chaoshan dialect and Chaozhou dialect, is a sub-dialect of Minnan dialect, which is distributed in Chaoshan area and overseas Chinese area in the east of Guangdong Province. The English name is Teochew or Chiuchow, which is a transliteration of the word "Chaozhou". Chaozhou dialect has been widely recognized by Chaoshan people at home and abroad because it has been used for more than 1000 years, and academic works such as dictionaries and monographs are all based on Chaozhou dialect. In recent years, a new name has appeared in Chaoshan dialect, but some people (mainly Chaozhou city) are opposed to naming it Chaoshan dialect and insist on using it. Chaozhou dialect is a branch of Minnan dialect, one of the seven dialects in China. Just like other Chinese dialects, it is still inconclusive whether Chaozhou dialect is a language or a dialect. However, from the perspective of pure linguistics, Chaozhou dialect and even the whole Minnan dialect can be regarded as independent languages because they cannot understand each other with other dialects. However, Chaozhou dialect can communicate with some sub-dialects of Minnan dialect, especially Fujian-Taiwan dialects in Zhangzhou, Quanzhou and Taiwan Province provinces, probably because it is located in an adjacent area. In areas where Chaozhou dialect and Fujian-Taiwan films blend, dialects have both pronunciation characteristics, such as Zhaoan in Fujian. Moreover, there are many kinds of Chaozhou dialect. No matter the residents in Chaoshan area or overseas Chinese, the Chaozhou dialect spoken is different, and the pronunciation is significantly different. There are many similarities between Chaozhou dialect in Fujian and Taiwan and Minnan dialect, but the differences between them are still obvious. Its grammar is the same as that of Fujian and Taiwan films, and its vocabulary is highly corresponding, but its pronunciation and intonation are obviously different. Even so, they can basically communicate with each other, and hipsters can quickly integrate into each other's language families.
