Transfer from Australia to the United States

Your situation belongs to international transfer. You can find the American university you want to go to, and then go to official website to find an international transfer in the admission. There are different requirements, but basically I will post a few related posts for you. Although it is not an Australian transfer, it is also an international transfer. Patience will be of great help to you!

All the following words are purely personal experiences. I only hope that everyone will throw a brick to attract jade and walk out of their own wonderful road. Unless otherwise specified, all American schools mentioned in this article are TOP50.

I turn, I turn, I turn.

Why do you want to transfer? This seems to be a meaningless question. But don't underestimate this matter, it is directly related to your mental state in the application process and whether you can persist until the end. In fact, studying abroad is like this. As long as you stick to the foundation, you will definitely win. As we all know, there is a saying in the East that comes from an old fish. That is to say, about 50,000 to 60,000 people in the East take exams and training abroad every year, but they can only walk 10,000 in the second year. (Now there are more than 100,000 people participating in overseas examination training every year. But we should also see the fact: how many people have participated in the training and even started to apply after the exam? Really stick to the end of the application? Someone said, "Nonsense, isn't the exam just for applying?" However, I have met countless people. They can not only endure boring GT study, get ridiculously high GT scores, but also get pleasure from GT. However, they can't stand the complicated procedures and articles that need countless retouching in the application process. The most exaggerated thing is that I am just tired of reading so many items in the application form. So, please ask yourself first: "Why do you want to transfer? Why study abroad? " If the answers are the following three, please relax: first, everyone else has left; Second, I don't know ...; Third, just go!

Personally, why do I want to transfer? First, I am dissatisfied with the fact that what I have learned is out of touch with reality. My brother, I study marketing. The current situation of business teaching in China is really terrible, and I think it is a waste of youth. Second, there is time. It is too easy for science students to study literature, but they are idle anyway. Third, vanity. Everyone has vanity, there is no need to hide it, but there is nothing to say. Fourth, be friendly to English (don't hit me! )。 From the beginning of primary school English, I am not afraid of all English exams.

Second, do it.

1. Unfortunately

Chairman Mao said not to be as big as one, two, three or four, and then follow the Arabic numeral 1234. But in order to be organized, I have to wronged everyone, please forgive me!

2. Prerequisites for transfer:

(1) Only freshmen and sophomores are eligible for transfer.

Yes, you are right. Junior and senior students can't transfer. There are only two options to transfer to the United States: freshman to sophomore; Sophomore students go to junior year. This has caused many problems, and everyone is most interested in whether they can re-enter the freshman year. First-class universities in the United States, especially the Ivy League (and Stanford and the University of California, Berkeley) are absolutely impossible! ! The school expressly stipulates that students must apply for transfer and cannot apply for new students. So, can you hide your studies? No way! Because if there is a vacancy in your academic performance, you must give the school an explanation and provide corresponding evidence. Therefore, for students who are studying, it is good to dream of ivy, but going to school means going to school. It doesn't matter if you can't. Don't fake it.

(2) TOEFL, GRE, SAT, Niu Ren

TOEFL is absolutely necessary, and the higher the score, the better. The higher the listening ability and TWE, the better. TSE is unnecessary. If it weren't for the awesome people going to Ivy League, it would be at least 650! But to be fair, it is unlikely that cows will turn to ivy. The so-called cattle people are generally people who have won international awards or outstanding performances, and the majors they apply for are consistent with them. At this point, all applications are the same. It should be noted that "awards are the same as applying for a major", and not all awards are useful. If you win the Olympic gold medal in informatics and apply for anthropology, nine times out of ten you will be sawed. However, if the reward matches the goal, it will exert its power. There are too many successful examples of this kind of cattle. The year before last, two elephants won the Olympic gold medal in mathematics, and the whole prize was transferred to Princeton. What are the requirements for transferring to Pudong University? Puda has no application for undergraduate transfer. What are your terms? But they just turned, and all the prizes were turned. So how appropriate is TOEFL? Ask yourself.

GRE is a compulsory test for Ivy League and Stanford (its purpose is to replace SAT). In fact, the difficulty of SAT and GRE can't be compared at all Even if you don't go to Ivy League and S, it will be of great help to other schools you apply for. Taking the GRE is by no means my own intention, nor is it the boring and spontaneous behavior of China candidates, trying to cause "internal competition". This is the requirement of the school (Ivy League, Stanford). In the letter sent to me by the lesbian in UPENN Admissions Office, she said, "We recommend GRE". If you still don't believe me, please go to Harvard's homepage to find a transfer. It clearly says that GRE is the only school that dares to say so. Although the wording is also a suggestion, it is impossible without it. I know something about Stanford. There are several transfer students, basically from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and other Shanghai schools, with a GRE of around 2,200. The GRE score is limited, and it is best to be between 2200 and 2290 (all applications are in this respect, please remember that famous schools are never bought with a GRE of 2400. And ensure that VQ 1400 is above). Not on 2200, dragging its feet; On 2300, I was suspected (I didn't believe it at first, and I don't believe it now. However, Ivy League schools have never heard of doubting students' TG scores.

Which is heavier, TOEFL or GRE? Personally, I think TOEFL is more important, because it is a language proficiency test, which is directly related to whether you can understand the class and communicate. GRE examines academic ability, but it doesn't explain my real strength.

If conditions permit, the SAT must be done. The so-called SAT is actually an exam similar to the college entrance examination for American high school students. It is divided into two parts, the required SAT I and the optional SAT II. SAT I is basic Chinese mathematics, and II is optional subjects such as physics, chemistry and advanced literature mathematics. This exam is not available in Beijing, but I think many DDMM in Shanghai have passed, which I envy. Therefore, I also appeal to students in Shanghai to inform students in other regions of the examination methods or places. The GRE just mentioned replaced the SAT. Why is the SAT better? First, the difficulty is low, and second, MIT does not recognize GRE. Mit courses can only be described in two words: hard core, but science, engineering and business are all very good. For students who love MIT, SAT is a must.

3. Conditions of transfer:

Throw away the word "prerequisite" and enter a more substantive stage. The content of this part directly determines the level of your school.

(1) University scores

GPA is the key point among the key points, and it is also a cliche. However, undergraduate transfer is very strict with GPA, and it is impossible to solve the problem with 3.2 like graduate students. If you transfer to Wharton, the GPA must be at least 3.5, otherwise it will not be considered. In this way, those with a weighted average score below 85 will lose money. But not all schools are as serious as Penn University, especially Wharton (really old-fashioned, and there is no other suitable word). You will find that the GPA requirement of some schools is N/A, which means that if you are a talented person, the school will be lenient with your GPA. On the other hand, it is much stricter in other aspects. You must write beautiful articles or have something outstanding. GPA, and it is the overall GPA, which is the basis of transfer. Unlike applying for graduate students, undergraduate students have to emphasize GPA (for two reasons: 1. Undergraduate students are purely studying, not doing research, which is different from professors working for graduate students; 2. Freshmen and sophomores don't have many specialized courses, which is why people want to be freshmen and sophomores: you must get enough education in this school; ) you can't emphasize ranking (after all, there is no certificate), so the score must be high.

(2) Extracurricular activities and misunderstandings

I don't know if you have noticed that our various disciplines are generally divided into academic and vocational categories. Academic majors are unprofitable majors, such as mathematics, physics and other basic disciplines; Vocational study is highly targeted and can make money, such as business, nursing, news and so on. In between, such as CS. Because I applied for business myself, I took the road of professional application. I don't know much about academic applications. I hope someone in this field can add something and do something for everyone. Let me talk about business applications first.

Business undergraduate application is similar to MBA (of course, I dare not compare with MBA predecessors), and extracurricular activities play a very important role. There are only a few kinds of extracurricular activities:

First, it is more useful and closer to everyone: the experience of working. Of course, it's better not to be the experience of making French fries in M's shop. It's the same old saying: it's related to the major you applied for. For example, if you apply for CS, the current network company is very bad. You are a "website maintenance", which is a bit useful; This is also useful for you to apply for marketing under the network environment. Have something to do with it. Americans like "paid work" very much, and they will ask you how much money you earn (voluntary answer).

Second, it's boring, but it's also useful: I used some student unions and clubs. Every year, countless students claim to be the president of the student union, so that it seems that the presidents of all the universities in China have gone to the United States. In fact, you don't have to be the chairman to show your leadership. Imagine that you write a page report similar to the work you lead and send it to the United States with the materials. How can we not leave a down-to-earth and responsible leadership image in their hearts? So you stand out among many presidents, and the men and women of the American University Admissions Office are in tears: "A young China leader came to the United States not far from Wan Li. What spirit is this ... this is the spirit of internationalism! " So is the club. At this point, it is necessary to repeat the previous content: it is best to participate in organizational activities related to the target major.

Third, the most useful (perhaps for business), but far from everyone: patents, companies. If you are really strong enough, you can own your own patents (some small inventors are very good, and several went to Ivy League the year before last) or participate in the establishment of companies and enterprises or major activities (it is not realistic for freshmen and sophomores to own their own enterprises in China, but the way of participation is different. Note that this is not a part-time job and requires company certification. ) I just started a company with my seniors and got some credit, otherwise I wouldn't be here today.

Misunderstanding:

The biggest misunderstanding is the certification misunderstanding!

There are too many certifications now, plus the kitsch atmosphere in the mainstream society. Let everyone feel that getting a certificate is a skill, and getting a certificate is a strength. Actually, it's not like this. I have almost all the computer certification qualifications in Beijing, but I dare not show them when applying. Why? Because:

I computer certification of foreign companies:

Represented by MCSE and CCNA. Anyone who is a little on the road knows: what is certification? Certification recognizes what? Is it your computer level? Absolutely not! ! ! ! ! A company's certification recognizes "the degree to which you use the company's products". Take MCSE as an example. In fact, it depends on whether you can set up and configure the network with Microsoft software. If you think that learning a little network basics and protocols is equivalent to understanding the network, then you will really become a well-meaning person. Everyone understands this. Suppose you are a comrade in the admissions office. Do you want someone who is "especially good at using Microsoft software"? What is the relationship between your good use of something and your future study? What does it have to do with your ability? In fact, the company I join is engaged in all kinds of training (which is embarrassing to say). I am directly responsible for the quality supervision of the courses (the training company that resolutely does not do backtracking) and several courses (MCSD, safety, SQL, etc.). So don't go astray and let these things go to hell for the time being.

Second, the domestic computer certification:

Another form of sadness, I learned everything about Bush. I don't think anyone is using this to help apply, just venting ~ ~ ~

Third, the economic certification:

A few days ago, I saw a middle school student set up a CPA here and was sawed by Harvard. He was very depressed. Admiration and surprise in my heart are like scouring the river. Of course, this student's examination ability is still quite strong. I'm not wrong, but the accounting system in China is completely different from that in Europe, Canada and Japan ... Many developed countries and regions (many accounting MBA seniors are here, so I won't make a fool of myself). How can you expect to use China characteristics to "peacefully evolve" homosexuals in the United States? ! Even so, what do they need a good accountant for? Can your accounting talent reflect your talent in XXX?

To sum up, for certification: if you want to apply, don't do any certification. Your best proof is your report card and other supporting documents. They put you in front of the admissions Committee.

1) Choose a school

Choosing a school needs attention:

-Professional issues

Do American universities have my major? This is the first consideration for transfer. In terms of business, among the top 10 schools in the United States, few undergraduate business schools:

MIT: Si Long Business School, very good.

UPENN: Wharton Business School, the best undergraduate business school in America! ! Ranked first in all majors. Teachers are all famous corporate consultants. My dream has been sawed! Ho ho ~ ~ ~

Duke: FUQUA (grandiose ! ) business school, very awesome.

Dartmouth: Good. The point is that once you are accepted, the chances of winning the prize are almost 100%! !

10 Countdown to 20 is not too much:

Cornell: There is an agricultural economics major, which is the lair of dog thieves, TMD Li. The agricultural economy itself is the first, but one is that there is no money, and the other is that it is not authentic as a business school. So I sawed ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

U Chicago: There seems to be, but I'm not sure yet.

Rice: Yes, I don't know.

University of Washington, St. Louis: Olin Business School, quite good. The teacher is the fifth in the United States. If you want me, give me some dollars. That's it! What impressed me the most was that I felt that people were doing very well in public relations. I always send my mother something about the school, sometimes it's a greeting letter, and sometimes it's the school's care for international students. ...

Go to business school and forget how to spell it. The level is very high! ! Marketing is the sixth in America. The overall ranking of undergraduate business schools is more than ten. But there is absolutely no money for international transfer students! Recorded me, reluctantly refused. There is also the question of deciding which school to go to. We should strike a balance between the professional level and the overall reputation of the school. My elder sister, who has been in the United States for ten years, has never heard of Emory. My buddy at Stanford said that at least half of Americans don't know Emory, but they all know Washington (although it's not clear which one). If two people are paired, I will see emory.

University of California, Berkeley: No one thinks that this school's comprehensive ranking of 20 reflects its true strength. UCB Haas Business School ranks third in undergraduate course and third in marketing major. However, the admission conditions were very harsh and they were sawed for no reason.

U Virginia: Business schools are also famous. There are no awards for non-native students.

So this is the most favorable place for students majoring in science. Every school that studies mathematics has the same physics and chemistry computer and so on. Finding a school is much wider. So how to choose? I choose five from top to bottom according to the comprehensive arrangement, starting from Wharton and ending at the University of California, Berkeley. Including UPENN, CORNELL, WU, EMORY, UC-BER. It's not that I have any extraordinary skills. I just think that if I go to school in America, I might spend my own money. Not going to the best is not worth it. So I ordered five. And don't have too many transfer targets. If you go to ten or fifteen schools like a graduate student, you will suffer a big loss. And nine times out of ten, I will give up a lot in the end. The reason can be seen in the "Composition" section below.

-Money.

Some schools make it clear that foreign students have no money and must give up without their own plans. Some schools say yes, but generally speaking, "very limited" is actually not available, so it is so helpless for undergraduates to change majors.

-The problem of basic credit courses

Big problem! ! ! The first is the credit limit: from sophomore to junior, his transferable credits must be between 60 and 90 (in most schools). Otherwise, I wouldn't consider changing my life. Transferable credits refer to similar courses in China and the United States. You need to describe it in the course introduction, see below. Don't think that the lessons of "Socialism", "Mao Zedong" and "Deng Xiaoping" are ignored. When I found that my Marx's political economy was transferred to "Economics Elective Course", I felt really ... very fulfilled ~ ~ ~ Some interesting things happened here. The course "Ideological and Moral Cultivation of College Students" is regarded as an "elective course of anthropology and moral ethics" by Americans because the English translation GP of the school failed.

(2) Various materials to be prepared

-Undergraduate report card (undergraduate report card)

First academic year+second academic year, first semester, notarization.

-High school report card.

Some schools don't require middle school transcripts. Seeing the requirements on the school form, I think we should send them all. Notarization.

-Personal statement (personal statement)

Some schools and undergraduate transfer schools and freshmen use the same form, but there are different parts. Among them, PS can choose freshmen to write an article, or choose an article topic specially designed for transfer. It is strongly recommended to write transfer. Because the topics of transfer are generally: "Why choose our school" and "Discuss your subject and future academic plans". Moreover, freshmen are very interesting, and there are all kinds of tricks. The most famous is UPENN. "You have written a 300-page autobiography, please submit 2 17 pages."

-Writing samples (writing samples)

In fact, during the application process, I personally feel that PS and WS are not very clear. Some PS words are very difficult and difficult to think, such as PENN above. But WS is nobody to deal with. For example, Cornell's "XXX, a famous American journalist and writer, said: a leaf, a stone and a book can reflect a person's personality, so please write an article according to this idea." These articles should be not only thoughtful, but also poorly written. So PS and WS are the most difficult parts in the application process. First, the ideological differences between China and the United States are not small. If you don't read too many articles at ordinary times, it will be more difficult to grasp. Second, each school has different topics and the workload is too heavy. It's really hard.

-ESSAY (essay)

Undergraduate students basically have no papers to speak of, but this is a game of chess. The content of the paper is mainly about the subjects you have studied. It's perfect if you publish it, and it doesn't matter if you don't publish it. Send it directly to show your love and opinion on this subject. Of course, the paper also has principles. First of all, the length should be short, two pages at most, which is also the writing time. Secondly, we should have a new view of our major. At this point, academic quotient is cheaper, and academic disciplines are even more lacking. Academic students need a lot of knowledge to have new ideas, and it is not difficult to make some superficial analysis of business phenomena.

-Resume (resume)

Mainly for applicants with complicated experiences. For example, you have part-time work experience, etc. It's not necessary.

-Letter of recommendation (letter of recommendation)

It is undoubtedly ironic to list letters of recommendation as students' materials, but that's the case in China. I think everyone should read the recommendation letter to the teacher as it is. Anyway, I did it. It was embarrassing ~ ~ ~ Although I didn't lie or brag. Here, I emphasize the difference between boasting and praising: avoid empty talk, give detailed examples, clarify the meaning of examples in one sentence if necessary, or not at all. Because the idea of recommendation letters is also coherent, American comrades are not stupid, and understand whether you want to praise or scold a person. The language should never be too good and the meaning should be clear enough. Too good language is self-defeating. Three letters of recommendation should be reflected from different aspects: class teacher (= tutor), classroom teacher and boss. Regarding the weight of letters of recommendation, I personally think:

Celebrity with teacher-student relationship > class teacher = boss > teacher > It's okay, celebrity

Here is a trick that graduate students don't have: a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher. Like a freshman, a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher is very useful if it is well written when transferring! When Cornell and Emory called to inform me that I was accepted, they both said, "Your high school teacher recommended you to us, which made us confident in you", but they didn't mention the recommendation of the university teacher. Of course, the recommendation of university teachers is absolutely important.

-Course description

Many schools require you to submit a course description, go to the school website, see how other people's descriptions are written, and try to lean on it. But if the course is really much worse, you will still suffer if you make up hard. When you get there, you can only rebuild or cram.

-Students' Union, societies, employment introduction documents, etc.

As I said for the first time, send the documents you think are beneficial to you. The school application form may say: For more than one introduction material, we will choose the short one. But it turns out that this is not the case. Even if it's true, he doesn't have to read it. You have to work hard. Write carefully.

For these articles, we must exhaust all our energy and go all out. So if you are as stupid as me (the copyright belongs to Yankee), don't apply to too many schools. Too many applications will definitely make you want to replace them with a few articles. The effect will not be very good. So focus on casting nets and focusing on salvage! ! And most importantly, the cooperation and revision of the documents will continue from the time you apply to the time you submit the materials. That's why we shouldn't put TG too far behind, and why some people can't hold on and finally scribble something.

Third, let's call it a day

As far as the overall difficulty is concerned, I think it is a little easier to apply for business. Extracurricular activities play a great role, and the course itself is relatively relaxed and has time. This may be because I applied more carefully. However, the weakness of business application is also obvious: there are few schools with business schools (I can still recall the feeling when I first learned that there were few undergraduate business schools: I was in a cold sweat), the number of admission places was small, scholarships were few, and visas were difficult. On the other hand, it is more difficult to send academic students: heavy schoolwork, difficult to get high marks, and few professional supporting factors (perhaps because I haven't thought about it well, I suggest to switch to academic talents again! ! But there are many advantages, which are basically the opposite of business. In fact, the final decision on the application depends on your own ability. Is it a cow? Is it an elephant?

Show yourself! ! ! ! !

Generally speaking, transferring to another school will cause a great psychological and physical burden to a student at school. Especially for those who want to finish everything in one year, I write this in the hope that you can avoid detours. But there is a situation that I don't want to see, that is, some freshmen and sophomore students read what I wrote and embarked on this road without considering it well. So I hope you think twice before you do. And what makes me feel ashamed is that this thing has always been named after the "undergraduate transfer strategy", but in fact, many common sense of studying abroad is not involved, just talking about the difference between transferring and applying for undergraduate and graduate students. But also the idea of business application. Therefore, I once again appeal to students who have transferred from various disciplines or have been admitted, and take the initiative to write down their own experiences and make a supplement.
