Why do American passports need to be notarized for domestic use?

American passport is a document issued by American government departments, and domestic government departments cannot confirm the authenticity of foreign documents. Therefore, when the American passport is used in China, it must go through the authentication procedure of the China Consulate in the United States to recognize its legal effect.

The process of notarization and authentication of American passports is as follows:

1. The American passport shall be notarized by the local notary office;

2. The American passport is submitted to the county clerk for authentication;

3. The US passport is submitted to the Secretary of State for authentication;

4. The American passport should be submitted to the China Consulate in the United States for consular authentication.
