The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is a cabinet department of the U.S. government, which aims to enforce the law and defend the interests of the United States in accordance with the law, and ensure that all Americans have access to fair and just justice (see 28 U.S.C. 50 1). DOJ is managed by the United States Attorney General (see 28 U.S.C. 503), who is one of the founding members of the Cabinet.

[Edit] History

At first, the Attorney General was a part-time job of one person, which was established by 1789 Judicial Act, but it grew with the development of bureaucracy. At one time, the Attorney General provided legal advice to the US Congress and the President, but this practice was stopped due to the heavy workload.

In 1867, the Judiciary Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Congressman William Lawrence, investigated the establishment of a "legal department" led by the Attorney General and composed of lawyers from various departments and state prosecutors. 1Feb. 9 1868, Lawrence put forward the proposal of establishing the Ministry of Justice in Congress. However, the first bill failed, because Lawrence was too busy impeaching President andrew johnson to ensure the passage of the bill.

Representative Thomas Jencks of Rhode Island submitted the second bill to Congress on February 25th, 1870, which was passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives. President Ulysses S. Grant subsequently signed the bill into law on June 22nd, 1870. The Ministry of Justice officially started to operate in July 1, 1870.

This bill, called "Act on Establishing the Ministry of Justice", has not changed the duties of the Minister of Justice, and his salary and term of office have remained unchanged. This law does create a new position, that is, the Deputy Attorney General, to supervise and handle the government litigation of the Supreme Court of the United States.

With the passage of 1870 interstate commerce act, the federal government of the United States began to undertake some law enforcement responsibilities, and the justice department was responsible for fulfilling these responsibilities. [ 1]

1872, the control of the federal prison was transferred from the Ministry of the Interior to a new department. New facilities were built, including 1895 leavenworth prison and 1924 women's facility in Alderson, West Virginia. [2]

The U.S. Justice Department Building was designed by Milton Bennett Medary and completed in 1935. After Medary died in 1929, his Philadelphia companies Zantzinger, Borie and other partners of Medary took over the project. It is located in the northwest of Constitution Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue, Ninth Street and Tenth Street, covering an area of over one million square feet. Sculptor C. Paul Jennewein served as the overall design consultant of the whole building and contributed more than 50 independent sculpture elements inside and outside.

Various efforts have been made to determine the meaning of the Latin motto Qui Pro Domina Justitia Sequitur appearing on the seal of the Ministry of Justice, but they have not been completely successful. I don't even know when the original DOJ seal was adopted, or when this motto first appeared on the seal. DOJ's most authoritative point of view is that this maxim refers to the Minister of Justice (we call it the Ministry of Justice) "prosecuting on behalf of justice (or female judges)".

The building was renamed in 200 1 to commemorate the former Minister of Justice Robert F. Kennedy. It is sometimes called "main justice". [3]

In March 2003, the US Immigration and Naturalization Service was abolished and its functions were transferred to the US Department of Homeland Security. The Immigration Review Executive Office and the Immigration Appeals Board review decisions made by government officials under the Immigration and Nationality Law, and they remain under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice. Similarly, the domestic preparation office is separated from the Ministry of Justice and attached to the Department of Homeland Security, but only for administrative purposes. The domestic preparation office is still concentrated in the Ministry of Justice, because its personnel are still officially employed by the Ministry of Justice.

Also in 2003, the Ministry of Justice created the LifeAndLiberty.gov website to support the Patriot Act. [4]LifeAndLiberty.gov is currently promoting the re-enactment of the USA Protection Act before its expiration. This website has been criticized by government monitoring organizations. [5]

[Editor] Controversy and Criticism

As we all know, several current and former US assistant prosecutors are involved in various criminal acts, including collusion with prostitution gangs [6], sexual assault [7], sexual abuse of children [8] and failure to disclose mandatory conflicts of interest [9]. There is an independent professional responsibility office in DOJ, which is responsible for investigating DOJ lawyer employees accused of misconduct or criminal activities in their professional functions as DOJ lawyers.

Former US Attorney General john D ashcroft acknowledged the challenges faced by the Ministry of Justice:

"In the real world with limited resources, we know that we can only find, investigate and prosecute a small number of corrupt officials." [ 10]

"I still firmly believe that in the fight against corruption, the most important thing is to keep the law enforcement and judicial departments clean. 」[ 1 1]

His appointment was approved by the US Senate on June 8, 2007, and he was sworn in the next day.

1789, the United States established the post of attorney general. I started as a part-time job, and my task was to provide legal advice to the US Congress and the President. However, with the expansion of American bureaucracy, the workload of this position is also increasing. 18 19, he was no longer able to serve as a legal adviser to the congress and the government. 1870 On June 22nd, the US Congress decided to establish the Ministry of Justice. Our department officially started work in July 1870. The establishment of this department has not changed the task, salary and status of the Attorney General. Under the federal attorney general, there is also a deputy attorney general, whose task is to represent the US government in handling legal disputes in the US Supreme Court. However, in more important legal cases, the Federal Minister of Justice still attended the trial.
