Deng's surname originated from Deng Guo (present-day dengzhou city) and got his surname because of his country. Deng Guo was sealed in the Shang Dynasty, and Deng Guojun was the uncle of Wu Ding and the emperor of Shang Dynasty. The book Shiben, which first recorded the surnames and lineages of princes and doctors from the Yellow Emperor to the Spring and Autumn Period, said: "Deng Weiman."

Another source of Deng's surname is that Li changed his surname to Deng. According to Hunan Anhua's "Deng's Genealogy", Li Yu, the queen of the Southern Tang Dynasty, once named her eighth son, Li Congying, as Deng Wang, and the Southern Tang Dynasty perished.
