Bai Bangrui's Experience

Bai Bangrui was born in 1945 and settled in San Francisco with his parents at the age of 5. The Chinatown there was his first impression of China: China restaurants and China immigrants fleeing the Civil War.

The Bai Bangrui family owns Pinshile Company, a famous big food company with a history of one hundred years. His parents had hoped that he would study business in order to take over the family business in the future. But he didn't listen to his parents' advice. When studying at Stanford University, he chose to study the history of China. When he was a Ph.D. student at Columbia University, he studied under brzezinski, assistant to the president for national security affairs during Carter's administration. A few years ago, he collected more than 600 articles by China officials and scholars. He said that he was worried about the nationalism of some China people. Therefore, he specially selected articles criticizing the United States and co-edited them as "American Scholars' Interpretation of China's Security". In this book, which reflects China people's views on the United States unilaterally, he draws a shocking conclusion: "China regards the United States as a war opponent". The China expert who is familiar with Sun Tzu's Art of War asserted that Deng Xiaoping's policy of "keeping a low profile and keeping a low profile" is a modern version of "sleeping on one's laurels", and the United States must avoid China from challenging its position when conditions are ripe.

When a reporter asked him why he had changed so much, he smiled and replied: "At that time, the Soviet Union was really strong. For the benefit of the United States, I advocate "uniting with China to resist the Soviet Union". But today, the situation has changed fundamentally. Isn't my position change normal? " At the Pentagon, Bai Bangrui is Rumsfeld's most dependent adviser on China affairs. He can tell the history of the relationship between the US and China's armed forces in one breath in Chinese, with a few idioms from time to time. He is a treasure from the chairmen of China's previous military commissions to China's military attache in the United States. Bai Bangrui always sits next to Rumsfeld at meetings of the Ministry of National Defense to discuss China policy, and his telephone hotline goes directly to several senior aides of Rumsfeld. Rumsfeld, on the other hand, often suggested that the State Council and the National Security Council read Bai Bangrui's book about the China People's Liberation Army. No wonder The Economist magazine commented that under the encouragement of Bai Bangrui, the Pentagon has always maintained a very cautious view on China's strategy, and he is the "fuse" that caused the opposition of government departments' China policies.
