What impact does the South-to-North Water Transfer Project have on the environment?

Before the implementation of the Middle Route of South-to-North Water Transfer Project, the annual discharge of Danjiang Reservoir was 38.5 billion cubic meters, and after the implementation of the project, 9.5 billion cubic meters of water will be transferred, accounting for about 27% of the discharge. Only the Xiangfan section directly discharges into the 36 main sewage outlets of the Han River, and about 3.5 billion cubic meters of sewage is discharged into the Han River every year. In addition, the Xiangfan section receives 6.454 billion cubic meters of super-class water from Xiaoqing River and Tangbaihe River, and the river flow is relatively large before water transfer. These sewage can be diluted and purified by the river itself. After the water transfer, the water flow is small, the flow speed is slow, and the self-purification ability of the river is weakened, which will aggravate the pollution of the Han River, cause serious ecological disasters, threaten the life and production safety of the people in the middle and lower reaches of the Han River, and make the Han River a new Huaihe River. The state compensation projects for the middle and lower reaches of the Han River, such as diverting the Yangtze River to Han Ji, can only solve the problems in the middle and lower reaches of the Han River, and Gucheng, Laohekou, Xiangfan, Xiangyang, Yicheng and Zhongxiang are important industrial and agricultural cities along the middle reaches of the Han River. The serious deterioration of water quality after water transfer will bring endless troubles to people's lives and industrial and agricultural production in these counties and cities.
