Greece is a country where same-sex marriage is legal.
The Greek Parliament passed this landmark bill in the early morning of December 23, 2016: allowing same-sex couples to form civil partnerships. Greece thus became the first Orthodox country to recognize same-sex unions.
There were 249 members present when the bill was voted on, and it was finally passed with 193 votes in favor and 56 votes against. Seven years ago, the Greek Parliament explicitly prohibited same-sex unions in a law granting equal rights to opposite-sex couples. This move was later deemed discriminatory by the European Court of Human Rights.
