Tianmen City, known as Jingling in ancient times, is one of the 17 provincial municipalities in Hubei Province. It is an important member of the Wuhan urban circle and the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. It was named "Tianmen" because of the Tianmen Mountain in the territory; in 1994, the State Council Tianmen City was approved to be a city directly under the jurisdiction of Hubei Province. As of the end of 2016, Tianmen City is a municipality directly under the jurisdiction of Hubei Province and has the management authority of prefecture-level cities. The city has jurisdiction over 3 sub-district offices: Jingling, Yanglin, and Houkou (Tianmen High-tech Park); 21 towns including Yuekou, Zaoshi, and Shijiahe; 1 township in Jingtan; the state-owned Jianghu Farm, and the Baimao Lake Cotton Field Farm, Shenhu Agricultural Comprehensive Demonstration Zone.

Tianmen City was originally Tianmen County and belonged to Jingzhou City. In May 1949, the Hubei Provincial People's Government was established. On the 25th of the same month, Tianjing Qian County and Tianhan County were abolished, and Tianmen County was restored. In July of the same year, it was changed to Jingzhou Prefecture of Hubei Province.

After the founding of New China, Tianmen County came under the jurisdiction of Jingzhou Prefecture. In 1970, Jingzhou Prefecture was renamed Jingzhou Area. On August 3, 1987, the State Council approved the abolition of Tianmen County and the establishment of Tianmen City (county level). The administrative area under the original jurisdiction of Tianmen County is still the administrative area of ??Tianmen City and is still under the jurisdiction of Jingzhou District, Hubei Province.
