Tianmen City, known as Jingling in ancient times, is one of the 17 provincial municipalities in Hubei Province. Tianmen City was originally Tianmen County and belonged to Jingzhou City. In May 1949, the Hubei Provincial People's Government was established. On the 25th of the same month, Tianjing Qian County and Tianhan County were abolished, and Tianmen County was restored. In July of the same year, it was changed to Jingzhou Prefecture of Hubei Province.
