In September 1950, Qian Xuesen resigned from his job, completed the procedures for returning to China, bought a plane ticket to return to China, and handed his luggage to American Airlines. However, at this moment, he received a notice from the US Immigration Service: He was not allowed to return to the country! He was forced to cancel his plane ticket. The U.S. Customs opened his luggage for inspection and insisted that it contained important secrets and that Qian Xuesen was a spy. In fact, his luggage only contained textbooks and notebooks that he planned to take back home. A few days later, Qian Xuesen was suddenly arrested and imprisoned in an island detention center, where he was tortured endlessly. Every night, the guards came every 10 minutes to turn on the lights, making it impossible for him to rest. In half a month, his weight dropped by more than ten kilograms.

The persecution of Qian Xuesen by the US authorities has aroused public outrage in the American scientific community. Many American friends came forward to rescue Qian Xuesen. They raised US$15,000 to bail Qian Xuesen out of detention. However, the FBI did not stop persecuting him. His movements were restricted, his letters censored, and his phone calls monitored. However, Qian Xuesen did not give in. He kept making demands: I want to leave the United States and return to my motherland.

In this way, he persisted in the struggle for 5 years. His struggle has won the support of people who uphold justice from all over the world, and has also received the cordial care of the Chinese government and people. Premier Zhou Enlai was very concerned about Qian Xuesen and personally inquired about his situation. He also instructed the Chinese representatives participating in the ambassadorial-level meeting between China and the United States to raise the issue of Dr. Qian Xuesen's return to China during the meeting. In 1955, the U.S. government had no choice but to allow Qian Xuesen to return to China. On September 17 of the same year, Qian Xuesen boarded the ship returning to China. On October 8, he finally returned to the embrace of his motherland.
