In which province is the Three Gorges Hydropower Station located?

The Three Gorges Hydropower Station is in Hubei Province. The Three Gorges Hydropower Station, namely the Yangtze Three Gorges Water Control Project, is also called the Three Gorges Project. The Xilingxia section of the Yangtze River in Yichang City, Hubei Province, China and the Gezhouba Hydropower Station in the lower reaches form a cascade hydropower station.

The Three Gorges Hydropower Station is the largest hydropower station in the world and the largest construction project in China. However, many problems caused by it, such as the relocation of immigrants, the environment and so on, have been accompanied by great controversy since the moment it began to build. The Three Gorges Hydropower Station has more than ten functions such as shipping, power generation and planting.

The Three Gorges Hydropower Station was approved by the National People's Congress of China in 1992 and officially started construction in 1994. On the afternoon of June 1 2003, water storage and power generation began, and it was fully completed in 2009.

Construction process:

The site selection of the Three Gorges Dam initially included several candidate dam sites such as Nanjinguan, Taipingxi and Sandouping. The final dam site of Sandouping Dam is located 38km upstream of Gezhouba Hydropower Station, with open terrain, hard granite geological conditions and low seismic intensity. There is a sandbar in the middle of the river, which divides the Yangtze River in two. On the left is the big river with a width of about 900 meters and the hill Tanziling on the bank of the river, and on the right is the Houhe River with a width of about 300 meters, which can facilitate the construction by stages.

Regarding dam height, there are three schemes in the planning: low dam, middle dam and high dam. During the period of 1950, under the influence of Soviet experts, many parties supported the high dam scheme. By1early 1980s, the idea of "short, flat and fast" had become the mainstream, so the low dam scheme was very popular. However, in order to improve the shipping conditions in Chongqing, all parties finally agreed to build the Middle Dam.
