Lanzhou New District is an administrative division of Lanzhou and a national new district. As an agency of the people's government above the municipality directly under the central government, Lanzhou New District has the approval authority of the people's government at the same level and is under the jurisdiction of Lanzhou Municipal Government.

After the founding of New China, the jurisdiction of Lanzhou New District was Wuwei District and Dingxi District of Gansu Province successively. Until 1970, the jurisdiction of Lanzhou New District belongs to Lanzhou City.

Gansu Province established Lanzhou New District on 20 10 and 12. Subsequently, in August of 20 12, the State Council approved the upgrading of Lanzhou New District to a national new district, making it the first national new district in northwest China and the fifth national new district.

Lanzhou New District is located in Qinwangchuan Basin in the north of Lanzhou City, Gansu Province. Located in the northwest of Longxi Loess Plateau, it is the intersection of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Mongolia Plateau and Loess Plateau, and it is also the interlaced zone where the rest of Qilian Mountain extends eastward and inserts into Longxi Basin. The landforms of Lanzhou New District are mainly hills on the Loess Plateau, and landforms of Pingchuan, Mao Liang, Gullies and River valleys.
