Theodore Herman Albert Dreiser (187 1- 1945) is the most outstanding realistic novelist in the history of American literature, and also an American naturalist who is famous for exploring the real life full of hardships.

Dreiser was born in a poor German immigrant family in the suburb of Treehot, Indiana. He is the first important writer from the lower class and non-Anglo-Saxon origin in the history of American literature. With the generous support of a kind middle school teacher, he entered Indiana University, but dropped out of school the next year and started to work as a cashier. He collected money from house to house all day, which exposed him to all kinds of characters and dark sides of the lower class, accumulated rich materials for his later creation, and also determined his tragic thoughts and naturalism in his creation. 1892, Dreiser entered the press and began his career as a journalist. He saw with his own eyes how poverty was despised and how hypocrisy was unimpeded. From 65438 to 0895, Dreiser lived in new york and began to write.

His first novel Sister Carrie (1900) tells the story of a rural girl Carrie who went to Chicago to make a living and became a famous actress, exposing struggle for existence under the cloak of social prosperity, and profoundly describing the society in which the rich and the poor are opposed in the United States. Later, Jenny gerhardt (19 1 1) came out, and then the first two books of the desire trilogy, The Financier (19 12), were published. The third part of the trilogy is Stoicism (1947). Genius (19 15) is one of Dreiser's most satisfactory novels. Dreiser's longest novel An American Tragedy (1925) is his masterpiece. With the theme of real crimes, cases and events, this novel deeply understands the endless desire and universal disillusionment experienced by Americans at the beginning of last century, and also reaches the peak of his artistic creation.
