There are two origins of the surname Fan:
1. The surname Fan comes from the surname Qi. According to "Diagnosis of Ancient and Modern Surname Books" and "Compilation of Yuanhe Surnames", Liu Lei, the grandson of Emperor Yao, served King Kong Jia of Xia and gave his family dragon control. Later he moved to Lu County and became the Weishi of Shang Dynasty. At the end of the Shang Dynasty, the country was in the Tang Dynasty. King Cheng of Zhou destroyed the Tang Dynasty and moved to Du, where he was named Du Bo. Du Bo was executed when he was found innocent, and his son went to Jin Dynasty to become a scholar. His great-great-grandson Shihui was granted the title of Fan (now Fan County, Henan Province) due to his meritorious service, and his descendants took the surname of Fan in the city of Feng.
2. Other ethnic groups change their surnames. During the Jin Dynasty, the southern barbarians had Linyi (the name of an ancient country, also known as Champa, and its hometown is in the south-central part of today's Vietnam). Wang Fanwen changed his Chinese surname to Fan for the Vietnamese; during the Jin Dynasty, the Jurchen Polo Shu family had three Chinese surnames, one of which was Fan; other ethnic groups such as Manchu, Jing, Yi, Achang, Tujia, Mongolia, and Hui have this surname.

During the reign of King Xuan of Zhou Dynasty, the doctor Du Bo was innocently killed. His son, Uncle Xi, fled to Jin and was appointed as a judge (judge). Uncle Xi's great-grandson Shihui served as the commander-in-chief of the Jin army. In 593 BC, he was promoted to marshal of the Chinese army due to his military exploits and took charge of the government. Shihui first received the title of Sui (today's Jiexiu, Shanxi), and later he was granted the title of Fan, so he was also called Suihui and Fanhui. After his death, he was given the posthumous title of Wuzi, so he was also called Fan Wuzi. Later, the descendants took the city as their surname and called it Fan surname. The surname Fan respects Fan Shihui as the ancestor of those with the surname Fan.
