The reason why there are so many ethnic groups is that Russia has so much land occupied by colonial expansion during the Russian period. So, why can Russia control so much land occupied during the colonial period? I think there are several reasons.

Even if some autonomous countries want to resist Russia, Russia will take measures to calm the reaction and continue to control the colonial land.

Russia has established a perfect law and constitution to rule the colonies, and also immigrated on a large scale, allowing Russian natives to immigrate to those colonial areas. The purpose of this is to make the number of local Russians occupy the majority, which is convenient for Russia to control the local area.

3. Colonial massacre and assimilation

When he first took control of the colony, the czar would order a mass slaughter of the colonists. There are not many people in those remote Siberian areas. After being massacred and assimilated on a large scale, they were even more unable to compete with powerful Russia, so they had to obediently obey Russian rule and become colonies.
