Do I have to do military service after immigrating to Singapore?

Two out of every three new immigrants' second-generation men choose to join the army and complete their national service, while the other loses his permanent resident status because he refuses to perform military service. Do you want to do military service after emigrating to Singapore?

Yesterday, Dr. Huang Yonghong, Minister of National Defense, revealed in a written reply to Dr. Lin Weijie, a member of Congress (Ji Yishun Constituency) that in the past five years, about 8,800 young men from the second generation of new immigrants joined the army for military service. Among them, about 6 100 people (70%) eventually became citizens of China.

According to Singapore law, all male citizens or permanent residents must complete two years of national service. After that, you must perform military service for combat readiness until you are forty or fifty years old.

New immigrants, whether citizens or permanent residents, are exempt from military service in the first generation, but their second generation of men must be enlisted at the age of 18, otherwise they will lose their permanent resident status. If you are studying, just like the children of China citizens, you can postpone your enlistment as long as you meet the requirements.

Huang Yonghong further revealed that in the past five years, 4,200 new immigrants of the second generation gave up their permanent resident status before performing military service. In other words, two out of every three children of new immigrants serve in the military, and the other would rather give up the qualification of permanent resident than join the army.

National service can promote new immigrants' sense of belonging to the country, which some people regard as an indicator of loyalty to the country.

The first generation of immigrants no longer need to be soldiers, and the second generation refuses to serve in the army, which makes some Singaporeans emotionally unacceptable.

Before, there were some new immigrants. Parents and daughters obtained citizenship, but their son retained permanent resident status and continued to enjoy welfare. After finishing middle school, they gave up their permanent resident status and went overseas to study in universities.

This has aroused the dissatisfaction of some people in China, who feel that they regard our country as a stepping stone, and also disperse valuable resources. I am more worried about these people returning to work after finishing their studies abroad.

Huang Yonghong reiterated that if the children of new immigrants lose their permanent resident status without military service, it will affect their future application for studying or working in China, and it will also be unfavorable for them to apply for permanent residents or citizens in the future.

He said that before renouncing permanent resident status, the children of these new immigrants will be reminded of the serious consequences of refusing military service.

Lin Weijie also asked the Ministry of National Defense what measures the Ministry of National Defense had taken to avoid similar incidents after a senior technician of the Air Force climbed the engine duct of an airplane and died during the orientation activities.

Huang Yonghong replied in writing that after the accident, the Air Force immediately reviewed all welcome activities, and in May 2009, the welcome activity of climbing the engine duct of the aircraft was completely cancelled.

On April 24, 2009, Fu Ying 'an, a senior technician of the Air Force, participated in the welcome ceremony game of the Air Force. He got into the engine duct of an F5 fighter, then climbed to the auxiliary door in front of the engine, and then exited the duct.

After completing the "tunnel crawling", Fu Ying 'an did nothing unusual and continued to participate in other activities. Later, he suddenly lost consciousness and died in the lounge. The forensic doctor thinks that Fu Ying 'an may have died of liver rupture due to squeezing into a small space.
