The novel unfolds in two parallel lines. The second line is that Zi Yue now lives in the countryside of England. Her daughter Nicky came to visit Confucius and stayed for five days. Confucius had an eldest daughter, Jingzi, who hanged herself.
Among them, Jingzi is the daughter of Zi Yue and her Japanese husband. After her husband died in World War II, Zi Yue immigrated to England with Jingzi. Nikki is the daughter of Zi Yue and her English husband.
The main line is that during the five days when Nikki came to Ziyue, Ziyue remembered the past in Nagasaki about twenty years ago. In Nagasaki, Zi Yue met single mother Sasuke and her daughter Wan Li. Zhen Zi and Wan Li immigrated to the United States with an American, but actually Wanli was unwilling to immigrate to the United States.
When I read the whole work, as the title shows, I was left with only a vague impression and a faint feeling. There are not many descriptive words in the novel that introduce the background of the story and the ins and outs of the characters, and it is not even a complete story. When I read the whole novel, my only thought was how kazuo ishiguro won the Nobel Prize in Literature last year. Because both the language and the story, the novel is so dull.

The novel does not describe the war, the face of Nagasaki after the war, or the tragic state of the characters after the war. The characters in the novel never talk about war, but respond to the horror of war with superficial calmness and strong silence, which is an abnormal calmness and restraint. Seemingly didn't cry, in fact, not crying doesn't mean not sad, just like laughing doesn't mean happy. To borrow a sentence from 1988, "Adults just forbear, just busy with their own affairs, just pretending to be strong to bear the burden of age, and adults will also suffer."
Here, I remember that Han Han once wrote in Confessions and Farewell, "I especially like MV-style emotional paragraphs, and I think all emotions should be generated in the course of things. Confucius calmly recalled such a long time, but his own words debunked the truth. He wants to be ironic and pathetic, ridiculous and sad, mixed with unspeakable helplessness. The impact of this ending is really powerful. If you have seen the movie Invisible Guest, you will definitely feel this power better. In the movie, in order to cover up the fact of his murder, the hero switches his position with his girlfriend in the murder with the intention of framing his girlfriend. I remember watching movies, I always believed that the hero's statement was all the facts. Until the moment of the final exposure, it was a bolt from the blue or a blow. Of course, it is not only the hero who is shocked, but also the audience. Perhaps the terrible thing about this dormant explosive influence is not how powerful it is, but that Confucius' heart has left a thorn in the reader's heart, and this pain has to be endured silently. What is even more frightening is that after Confucius told the truth, the narrative style remained the same, and kazuo ishiguro never intended to make a sensation. The calmer, the more terrible, the more terrible and the more cruel.
