What does it mean to sit in an immigration prison?

You won't get permanent residency until you have gone through the formalities of emigrating to a certain country. If you want to become a citizen, you must live in that country for more than a few years before you can apply for naturalization. People jokingly call this period of stay as not being able to leave the immigration prison.
