Now that I have applied to settle in Hong Kong and cancelled my account, will my ID card be taken away together?

Those who apply to settle in Hong Kong and do not apply for a home visit permit do not need to cancel their domestic accounts or get their identity cards back.

Home Visit Permit is a travel document for Hong Kong and Macao residents to and from the Mainland. After obtaining the Hong Kong permanent identity card and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport, they must cancel their accounts in the Mainland when applying for the Home Visit Permit.

According to the current regulations, Hong Kong residents can only use the Home Visit Permit for Hong Kong and Macao residents to enter and leave the Mainland. Therefore, if you have Hong Kong permanent resident status, but you don't have a Home Visit Permit, then you can only use the Hong Kong and Macao Pass issued by the Mainland for customs clearance just like mainland residents.

When relatives (such as spouse, 18 years old, children, parents) apply for a family reunion visa in Hong Kong, the Home Visit Permit is indispensable information. Therefore, if it is necessary to apply for Hong Kong reunion status for the corresponding relatives, the parties concerned must first cancel their mainland status in China and obtain a home visit permit.
