Introduction to Chinese in john steinbeck

John Ernst Steinbeck (1February 27th, 902-1February 20th, 968) is one of the most famous and widely read writers in the 20th century in the United States, a social activist and a Nobel Prize in Literature laureate.

Early life and works

Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California on 1902. Steinbeck's father, John Ernest Steinbeck II, was the first generation of German immigrants in the United States, with German and Irish ancestry. Steinbeck studied at Stanford University on and off until 1925. Instead of graduating, he decided to go all out to become a writer.

Steinbeck's first novel, published in 1929, was based on myth and named "Golden Cup", but unfortunately it was not successful. The first time Steinbeck was appreciated by critics was his novel "Tortilla Apartment" written in 1935, for which he won the gold medal of California Federal Club. This story about a young man's experience in Jack's tortilla apartment in Monterey, California during the Great Depression was put on the screen in 1942, starring Spencer Tracy, hedy lamarr and john garfield.

He was the winner of 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature. His major works include of mice and men (1937), Grapes of Wrath (1939), East of Eden (1955) and Walking with Charlie. Steinbeck's works mostly describe the lives of ordinary people and migrant workers during the Great Depression, and people struggling in life often appear in his works, which is considered to be influenced by naturalistic literature. His stories and characters come from the real historical environment and events in the first half of the 20th century. His novels reflect his wide interests, such as marine biology, jazz, politics, philosophy, history and mythology.

His seventeen works include of mice and men (1937), Grapes of Wrath (1940), Pearl (1947) and East of Eden (1955).
