The history of Gaolou Town

Gaolou Town is one of the birthplaces of Ruian civilization with thousands of years of civilization history. As early as the Neolithic Age, four or five thousand years ago, the ancestors of Sangang thrived in this fertile land. In the second year of Wu Chiwu (239) of the Three Kingdoms period, Ruian County was established. Since then, Gaolouudi has been under the jurisdiction of Ruian County (City).

Gaolou was called Sangang in ancient times, and "Three Gangs" is the general name for the main stream of Feiyun River ("Dagang"), Panxi (Gaolou River, "Gaolou Port"), and Yuquan River (Dongkeng Port).

In 317 AD, Sima Rui crossed the Yangtze River and established the Eastern Jin Dynasty, bringing Wang, Xie and other wealthy families to the south of the Yangtze River.

During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period (907-960), the princes, princes and nobles of Fujian, which was adjacent to Ruian, fought against each other for power and profit. The wars were endless and the people were in dire straits. Common people migrated to Wenzhou and Ruian one after another. It was at this time that most of the clansmen in Gaolou moved here from Fujian.

In the early years of the Northern Song Dynasty, the imperial court had established Jiayu Township in the west of Ruian (equivalent to today's vast area from Dazhuo in the west to Mayu in the east), which governed Gaolou and other villages and towns. In the Southern Song Dynasty, due to the establishment of Lin'an (Hangzhou) as the capital, the three ports developed more rapidly and became important ports and commercial centers along the Feiyun River at that time.

In the early years of the Yuan Dynasty, the Three Ports Inspection Department was established. .

In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, this large area of ??land belonged to Guanghua Township (Forty-Seven Capitals) and Jiayu Township (Forty-Eight and Forty-Nine Capitals).

In 1928, the government established the Southern District (renamed the Fourth District in 1931) in the original Jiayu Township. The district office was located in Gaolou (located in Yingqian from 1934 to 1938), with jurisdiction over Jiangsu District. There are more than 20 townships including Gao, Jiangle and Jianglong. At the beginning of 1946, Ruian County's administrative divisions underwent a major merger, and 92 towns were merged into 48 towns. Gaolou District governed Wenhua (today's Pingyangkeng), Yingyuan Township, Gaolou Township, and Fengyu Township.

In May 1949, the Preparatory Committee of the Gaolou District People's Government was established (later the District People's Government was formally established in August of that year, and changed to the District Office in August 1950), with jurisdiction over Fengyu, Gaojing and other districts. 8 townships (Fengling Township was added in 1950). After several changes, in June 1992, the district was withdrawn, expanded into towns and merged into townships, including Longhu, Pingyangkeng Town and Gaolou, Yingqian, Ningyi, Dongyan and Fengling Townships. In May 2011, Gaolou Town was merged and established, with Xicun Village (former Longhu Town resident) located at the site.

In 2011, Longhu Town, Pingyangkeng Town, Gaolou Township, Ningyi Township, Fengling Township, Yingqian Township, and Dongyan Township were abolished and merged to establish Gaolou Town.
