There are nine regions and cities in Fujian. Why is it called the "Eight Fujian Land"?

Fujian is abbreviated as "Min". This Min originally meant an ethnic group. There are two main ways to say that Fujian is abbreviated as "Eight Min".

1. It is related to the number of administrative regions in Fujian history. As early as in the Tang Dynasty, Fujian had five states, namely Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Zhangzhou, Jianzhou and Tingzhou. By the Northern Song Dynasty, Fujian had evolved into six states, and two more armies were added, which are now the Xinghua Army and Shaowu Army.

In the Yuan Dynasty, the names of various prefectures and prefectures were changed to "roads", which are equivalent to the current prefecture-level cities. There are eight roads in Fujian, namely Fuzhou Road, Xinghua Road, Zhangzhou Road, and Quanzhou Road. Jianzhou Road, Yanping Road, Tingzhou Road and Shaowu Road.

In the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty, the number of states increased again. In the Qing Dynasty, it increased to 11 states. However, when counting "several Fujian", the states are not included, only the number of "fu" is counted. After Yongzheng, Fujian was also called "Shifu", but this spread did not last long.

Although Fujian has been called 9 states and 12 states in history, the Song Dynasty is the one that impressed people the most, because the Song Dynasty had the greatest influence, coupled with the "eight prefectures" in Fujian, over time , Fujian gradually became known as "Eight Fujian".

But before the Qin Dynasty, Fujian was called "Qi Min", mainly because there used to be seven relatively large tribes. After Yue's demise, the surviving Yue people immigrated to Fujian and merged with the indigenous people of Qi Min. Later, "Qi Min" gradually came to refer to Fujian.

In 985 AD, Emperor Taizong of the Song Dynasty established the Six Prefectures and Two Armies, which lasted until the Southern Song Dynasty. Fujian was called "Eight Fujian" and it is still used today.

2. Another way of saying it is that "Ba Min" refers to the eight major surnames, namely Lin, Chen, Huang, Qiu, He, Hu, Zheng, and Zhan. They did a lot of great things in Fujian and took root here to continue their descendants, hence the name "Eight Fujian".
