Why is sleeping called "going to Suzhou"?

At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, peasant uprisings surged. Zhu Yuanzhang, Zhang Shicheng, Chen Youliang and Xu Shouhui revolted one after another and finally overthrew the rule of the Yuan Dynasty. Since then, Zhu Yuanzhang and Zhang Shicheng have waged a life-and-death struggle for the world. As a result, Zhang Shicheng was defeated and killed, and Zhu Yuanzhang founded the Ming Dynasty. Taizhou is the birthplace and important stronghold of Zhang Shicheng. In order to capture Taizhou City, Zhu Yuanzhang sent generals Xu Da and Chang Yuchun to attack Taizhou from Yangzhou along the land from the riverside boiling water road. Zhang Shicheng, Taizhou Department, insisted on Xia Sigong and stubbornly resisted. Unable to attack for a long time, Zhu Yuanzhang ordered him to build a city in Hai 'an and cut off supplies and contacts east of Taizhou. Later, Xia Sigong was outnumbered because of supply difficulties, which led to the fall of the city. After the city was destroyed, Zhu's army turned the casualty cost of siege into resentment against Taizhou, and burned and killed it, burning the once prosperous East Gate to Ximen Street into a scorched earth. Just after the war spread all over Taizhou, Zhu Yuanzhang sent someone to pry open the Gaojiayan on Hongze Lake because he didn't hear the good news, and the flood rushed to Taizhou like a beast, drowning the postwar Taizhou city. It is recorded that Taizhou at that time was "three feet of water at the head of the city and seven households on the slope". This continuous disaster of burning, killing and destruction has left the ancient city of Taizhou, which has been operated by dozens of generations for more than 400 years, devastated, and its residents either died or migrated.

It happened that in Suzhou, the capital of Zhang Shicheng, the citizens didn't like Zhu Yuanzhang, but they still regarded Zhang Shicheng as the prince. In order to punish Suzhou citizens and rebuild Taizhou, in the early years of Hongwu, a "Hongwu eviction" incident occurred, that is, Zhu Yuanzhang drove Suzhou people from Nagato to Taizhou in northern Jiangsu, and some of them moved from Taizhou to Hai 'an, Dongtai, Funing and Xinghua. So a large number of Suzhou people became Taizhou people. Because the immigrants from Suzhou to Thailand are punitive, they are supervised and managed by local officials, rural insurance and Li Zheng. Immigrants are afraid to openly express their thoughts of missing their homeland for fear of being accused of rebellion. Coupled with the inconvenient transportation at that time, Taizhou and Suzhou were hundreds of miles apart, and there was a surging Yangtze River barrier in the middle. Even with the gradual relaxation of long-term management, it is difficult for ordinary people to return to Suzhou. Suzhou residents who moved to Thailand have deep feelings for their ancestral hometowns, cities, streets, rivers and wells. They are afraid to talk about their homesickness, and it is quite difficult to visit their hometown. I can only dream of Suzhou in my sleep and return to my hometown. Gradually formed a kind of sleep is to go to Suzhou, home spoken language.

For hundreds of years, the descendants of Suzhou immigrants have passed on this homesickness complex from generation to generation. The saying that sleeping is "going to Suzhou" is widely circulated in Hailing, Taixing, Jiangyan, Xinghua and Hai 'an. Because of the geographical relationship, Jiangdu, Yangzhou, Yangzhong and other places now have such a saying.

Many famous families in Taizhou have records of moving from Suzhou in the early Ming Dynasty. Mr. Xia Naian's "A Brief Introduction to the Clans in Taixian County" also said that the indigenous Tai people were extremely rare in the old clans before the Song and Yuan Dynasties. Nine times out of ten, the clans in our city moved to Thailand by Su, but today's Thais, such as Ding, Wang, Zhu, Zhong, Li, Yu, Xia, Xu, Yuan, Gao, Zhang, Cao, Huang and Lu, mostly moved in the early Ming Dynasty. In addition, dozens of epitaphs and land certificates unearthed in Taizhou after the founding of the People's Republic of China are mostly recorded in Suzhou. The historical facts of Suzhou emigrating to Taizhou in the early Ming Dynasty reflected by the existing written materials and archaeological materials are completely consistent with the fact that Taizhou people are still talking about sleeping, going to Suzhou and returning to their hometown.

The ancestors who immigrated from Suzhou to Taizhou brought the talents of Suzhou people to Taizhou and gradually merged with the local Taizhou people. After nearly a hundred years of joint efforts, Taizhou became a city with prosperous economy, developed transportation, prosperous culture and full of vitality in northern Jiangsu in the Ming Dynasty. Sleep, go to Suzhou, go back to my hometown.
