Geography of Tawau

Tawau is located in the southeast of Sabah, on an extended coastline, facing the Sulawesi Sea and backed by inland mountains. The geographical location is 4.233o north and 117.833o east.

The town is divided into 3 districts: Sabindu, Fatga and Old Tawau. The Federal Building is the main location for Malaysian government departments such as the Immigration Department and the National Registration Department, located in the Sabindu District. Fajia is Tawau's modern business district, where major banks such as The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, Maybank, and Public Bank are located. Old Tawau is the original district of Tawau, with the Tawau Central Market and Tawau Port.

There is a beautiful mosque and many shops. The open-air stalls located on the waterfront sell a variety of seafood delicacies. Tawau Pier is a docking station before heading to Indonesia, so many ships from the Philippines and Indonesia are often moored here. The fish market here is very active, selling fresh fish and game.
