Character experience, Wang Ganjun.
From 65438 to 0948, Wang Ganjun entered Shanghai Zheng Zhi Primary School (now Changshu Road Primary School) at the age of 8.
1952 moved to Taiwan Province province with his parents. After that, I studied in the middle school attached to Taipei Normal University, and my academic performance has always been among the best in my class.
1960, after graduating from Wang Ganjun Middle School, Wang Ganjun entered the Mathematics Department of HKU because he wanted to be a scientist in the future. From 65438 to 0963, Wang Ganjun immigrated to the United States with his family and studied physics at UCLA.
Bachelor degree 1967, master degree 1 year. After that, he continued his studies in school, specializing in solid state physics, fluid mechanics and acoustics, with special emphasis on their interrelationships.
197 1 year received a doctorate in physics.
From 1972 to 1988, I worked in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) of California Institute of Technology. At JPL, he was responsible for initiating and developing the research of containerless processing science. Served as the main project leader of several NASA projects, including the droplet dynamics experiment of NASA Space Laboratory No.3, the bubble dynamics experiment of NASA Flight Experiment #77- 18, the volumeless material processing technology experiment of NASA Flight Experiment #76-20, and the spherical shell dynamics research of the US Department of Energy.
1974 put forward the suggestion of "droplet dynamics experiment" on the space shuttle.
1975 became an American citizen. In the following year, a paper on the morphology of rotating droplets under zero gravity was published. This paper attracted the attention of NASA, and then Wang Ganjun was selected as the scientist for the space experiment 3 mission in June 1983.
Committed to the study of suspended fluid mechanics. 1979 was selected as a researcher in the space laboratory of the National Aviation Society of the United States, and 1983 began to receive space flight training. 1On April 29th, 985, the Challenger took off and flew around the world 120 laps, successfully completing the experimental plan of space fluid mechanics. At present, he is the director of the space materials processing department of Jet Laboratory. 1985 won the achievement award of the Chinese society for science and technology in southern California in February, and 1988 was appointed as the president of the American branch of space explorers.
1985 flew on the space shuttle challenger (mission code: STS-5 1-B) for seven days from April 29th to May 6th, 1985, and returned to the ground of Edwards Air Force Base, California, and completed the physical experiment of droplet dynamic behavior in zero gravity. Using the free-fall tower, KC- 135 aircraft and SPAR rocket in Johnson Space Center and other facilities, to create an experimental environment close to zero gravity, Dr. Wang tested his voice-activated suspension system and conducted a preliminary experiment on droplet dynamics on the ground. The results of these experiments provide useful data parameters for droplet dynamics experiments in space laboratory 3. He is also the inventor of acoustic suspension system and space experimental cabin. This is the first space lab mission. The seven members of Challenger carried out research on crystal growth, droplet dynamics and related volumeless material processing engineering, atmospheric tracking gas spectroscopy, solar and planetary atmospheric simulation, cosmic light, laboratory animal and human medical monitoring, etc.
The launch process of the spacecraft was perfect. Except for Dr. Wang's experiment, all the systems are running smoothly. Dr. Wang's experimental equipment is out of order. The possibility of returning empty-handed made him sad. Because he is the first Chinese astronaut to go into outer space, the Chinese American community has a strong interest in his mission. Failure will be disappointing. In China culture, the first thing you learn as a child is not to bring shame to your family.
He asked the flight control center to allow him to repair his instrument, but the control center refused his request on the grounds of safety. He understood NASA's point of view, but he was almost desperate. He said, "I won't go back until you give me a chance to practice." .
He knew there was no way to "not go back". Bob Overmyer, the commander of the mission, couldn't stop the space shuttle and throw him into the distant space. The tradition of Japanese suicide by caesarean section can't even be staged, because everything on the space shuttle is designed for safety reasons. Besides, if he tries to hang himself, in the absence of gravity, he will just float in the air like a rope around his neck and look like a fool.
Fortunately, NASA finally concluded that he was not bluffing and gave him a chance to repair the instrument. After working day and night, he went round and round the earth. He repaired the instrument and the experiment was successful. The results of this experiment continue to promote his current research interest.
By the end of this flight, Dr. Wang had flown 2.9 million miles in space and circled the earth 1 100 times, which lasted 168 hours. In all respects, this is a successful task. However, there is also a critical moment in this task. Commander Overmyer of STS-5 1B later found that 5 1-B had an O-ring problem similar to 5 1-L during the accident investigation of challenger STS-51L. Engineer Morton Sekol later told Don Linde, STS-5 1B crew, "You all came back to life in 0.3 seconds".
Dr. Wang developed a multi-cavity capsule system with immune isolation function by using the research results of microgravity compound droplet experiment in space mission STS-5 1-B, which can effectively transplant cells, protect transplanted cells and avoid the use of immunosuppressive drugs and their negative side effects. This new immune isolation system is composed of multiple composite components and multi-layer membrane walls, which can allow all capsule design parameters to be independently optimized to ensure large-scale repeated production in large-scale animal and human applications. Recently, Transplantation Journal published an academic paper on the successful application of Encapsulife technology in large-scale animal transplantation cell experiments, which passed the expert review. In this landmark study, encapsulated canine islets were transplanted into dogs with diabetes after pancreatectomy. The microencapsulated islet cells transplanted in the same species show good activity and biocompatibility, and do not need any drugs or anti-inflammatory treatment to inhibit immune response. Through one-time transplantation, a total of 9 dogs reached the normal fasting blood glucose level of 200 days. In addition, 200 days after the first transplantation, retransplantation of encapsulated islets (extra dose) can effectively control blood sugar.
Dr. Wang is a centennial tenured professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He has published about 200 journal articles and holds 28 American patents in the fields of vacuole dynamics, droplet collision and combination, electrohydraulic droplet dynamics, volumeless material science and/or stem cell transplantation. His experimental projects were carried out in American Microgravity Laboratory 1992 (USML- 1) and American Microgravity Laboratory 2(USML-2) in 1995. Be listed in the who's who of science in America.
Dr. Wang has won many awards and honorary titles, such as NASA Space Flight Medal/KOOC-0/985, Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award/KOOC-0/987, Asia-Pacific American Achievement Award/KOOC-0/989, Llewellyn J. Evans Outstanding Scientific Engineering Management Award/KOOC-0/994 and Vanderbilt Award/KOOC-0. In 2007, Dr. Wang was awarded the Outstanding Science and Technology Award by the American Society of Engineers in China and the National Engineering Foundation of the United States. He also delivered a speech on "There is only one Earth Day" at 1990 United Nations General Assembly.
